Default Earl Scruggs Inspiration

After hearing Earl Scruggs passed on to that bluegrass patch in the sky, I thought it might be nice to learn the 5-string banjo. I've always wanted to, so any reason is a good reason.

Does anyone on the board know how to play? I'm a fair guitar player (better bassist), but the banjo is pretty different. I'm not above taking some tips from an experienced picker.

Contrary to popular belief I have never played the instrument. Good Luck

My brother plays a little. He has taken some lessons from a guy who is older than the hills down in NC. I really love to listen to banjo, even had a Bluegrass band play at our wedding reception. I was sad to hear about Earl Scruggs.

Maybe you should buy the Caddy Shack DVD, you'd get some hints there.

Bryce, the closest I've ever came to what you're working on, is eating a 96 oz steak, after John Candy died.

Good luck!

It's been a long time since I've seen someone name drop "Caddy Shack"!

A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice

Well, I will find out soon. I ponied up some cash for a pretty good banjo. I guess if I can handle a 6-string fretless bass finger-style, I should be able to handle a banjo....I hope hehe.
