Open Water fishing
Can you guys help me with open water fishing? My fish/depth finder is not high quality, it shows the water temp, depth, and fish availability, but it fails to describe bottom structures. I always see fisherman fish in open water, and catch quality bass.
Any advice? -stevo

well if you want to find the structures just strap on your trusty goggles and dive in ,
just kidding man couldn't resist it , try throwing a couple of exploratory casts and let a worm or other bottom lure you would usually throw drag the bottom pay close attention to were it falls a little or drops suddenly and when it comes over objects . After a few times you should have a idea about what the bottom is like .

Stevo if you want to fish open water then there is one very important tool that you will need......... A very detailed map! You use the map to find the secondary points, ledges, humps, old creek channels, roads, etc. You find these structures on the map and you go put the trolling motor in the water and see if they hold fish. Maybe there is grass growing up to the ledges. You just have to enjoy picking out places and go fish it to see if it is holding fish. Also remember to choose structure that is at the depth the fish at. Don't go fishing a 20' break in the middle of spring!
P.S. I personally don't even like fishing the bank anymore! I love fishing main lake points, river channels etc. |

I tihnk what you need is a search lure. Try a crankbait to see if there are fish in the area, if so and they like the crank, keep fishing it. If they are there, and don't seem too interested in the crank, try a something different. The thing is, you know the fish are there.
