I agree about the truck load of money, but I think you can do fine with one decnet rod/reel setup.

If you've used spinning gear before, it'll work, but baitcasting will probably be better. Since you mention no budget, I'll tell ya some good stuff (not the most expensive crap, but still great gear.) For a BC reel, Daiwa's are my favorites. Here's a couple good ones.

I wouldn't spend much more than this one, but these are absolutely great reels.

Also, there Abu Garcia, another favorite reel company.

There they are, the REVO S, SX, STX, and PREMIER are all great reels. Also the Skeet Reese REVO is great too, and it looks absolutely killer.

I'm not a big fan, but Shimano, Quantum, and Pflueger are some other choices.

As for a rod: Fenwick, Falcon, Shimano, All Star. For an all around setup, 6'6" - 7' M - MH should be fine. A general rule though: single hook lures= MH or heavier, multi hook lures (trebles)= M or lighter. I learned that here, and I wouldn't go any lighter than M on baitcasting gear.

If you want to go with spinning, Shimano or Abu Garcia for reels, and same companies or rods. same rod lengths and powers as well.

For line, IMO, braid is good all around. I use it for worms and thick cover. I use mono for topwaters and crankbaits, and fluorocarbon (or light braid) for finesse. I would not use Fluoro on a baitcaster though if it's your fiurst time with a BC reel.

Hope this helps,

BB

The monkey's in town!

Start off with a user friendly reel (a type in which you are familiar with, either the one with the button, spinning rod, or baitcasting) Next, you will want a fair rod (medium action is basically universal!) Start with basic baits (crankbaits and/or spinner baits) You don't want to buy a whole lot of lures just yet, becasue you may buy the wrong colors, types, etc. (this has happend before to ME!!!!). Use a basic 12lb test mono line. Start off with a small tacklebox, then upgrade with your experience as you will buy more and more and MORe and MORE lures! Ask people around you lake, pond, etc., for any tips and lure types and colors, because no one knows your lake, pond, etc. then the man who fishes it everyday!

Good luck, and Welcome to the Forum! Much to learn have you!

Buddy, just buy what you have the budget for and soak up all the tips you can from any source you can. The more you're able to fish the sooner you'll start seeing patterns emerging and gaining confidence with certain baits and techniques. There's no manufacturer that has a lock on productive baits or equipment. Most $5 crankbaits, if used correctly, will catch fish like a $20 bait. An inexpensive, well made rod, if taken care of, will do fine. Then, as you do gain that experience and develop your OWN style, you'll have the knowledge to start putting together a toolbox geared toward your strengths and interests. In short...What stevomac59 just wrote. Good luck and welcome!
