Your "stay away" bait?

Following the other thread, what bait do you stay away from? Let's make it two fold:
Which do you know that you should use but don't, and plan on learning?
Which do you have no confidence in and feel it is good for nothing?


For me, jigs are the first one. They catch fish, big fish, but not for me. I need to take a long time and figure out the right "feel" for them.

The second one for me are spinnerbaits. I don't have any use for them other than catching pike, and I hate pike.

I have no confidence in a lipless crankbait. I know they slay fish but I have no luck with them. Drop Shot rig is another that I'm slow to come around on however I mainly fish rivers and feel that's more of a lake thing.

As for learning, I would like to use more t-rigged worms, just don't toss them much.

I would say I don't have any confidence in deep diving crankbaits (10+'). I have them, just don't know when to use them.

Now this is one tough question. Confidence is a huge factor in what we use in any particular situation and what stays in the box. I rarely use a popper in calm water, I can't remember the last time I actually tied on a buzzbait, yet I carry a 1/2 dozen of them at all times. I rather just leave one of my spinnerbaits tied on. Same for Horny toads, always have plenty with me, but I slop fish with frogs/rats instead. I like to pitch 1/2 jigs into weed holes over wt plastics, but along a weed edge I'm 99% wt. plastics.

If you are talking about Hula Grubs with jigheads, then, yes, I have caught many fish, especially smallmouth on them.

If you are talking about the good ole' pig and jig . . . then I have to admit that when they are on my rods, they repel fish.

I fish a Hula Grub tex-posed with a 1/4-3/8 oz bullet weight. I've never fished it on a jig head. Seems to me that it's almost like fishing a jig & pig all rolled into one. Or am I completely off base with my assertion ?

I´m stubborn, I still try to catch fish on buzzbaits, have caught 5 or 6 bass on buzzbaits in ....... lemme see...... 28 years !

You can´t say I´m a quiter, well, maybe after 28 years and a few fish I should evaluate thoroughly if I should continue trying.

Thank God Zooker isn't deceased because this would make him roll in his grave, but for me it is Crank Baits. I own maybe 4 of them and if you take out the fish I have inadvertantly snagged while burning them, I don't catch much at all on them. Heck I have caught more catfish than bass on them in the past two years.

geez this one I had to think on, I've never caught any fish on a jitterbug or hulapopper, and yes, I know everyone rates them high on the list...
I cant put down the popR or buzzbait, ask anyone that fishes with me rofl
Heres my theory on lures that everyone has no confidence, if you fish it only day after day sooner or later a fish is going to hit and you'll gain experience and more confidence that it will work..
I went through this with the jig n pig years ago after being shown how effective they can be...it took a long time before I boated a bass on the pnj, but sticking with it is key...

I have no confidence in spinnerbaits or swimbaits. But then again maybe I havent given them a fair shot. Always find my self going back to my go to baits, crankbaits, t-rigs, c-rigs, flukes, etc.... maybe I'l have a little more patients with them next spring.

for me it's buzzbaits , followed by lip less crank baits , I am terrible with both , but goning into this summer I was terrible with a jig and am now confident in them so we'll see what the next season holds .

i am happy i aint..i think...


for me it is the dropshot.. i don't use it.. imo it is just too dam slow.. i loath a carolina rig but force my self to use it..

I'm with BA. Got a box of lipless crankbaits and catch very few fish on them. Also don't do much drop shotting.

i really don't have a bait that i don't have confidence in. i fell i can catch fish on anything in my boat if i have to, otherwise i would throw them out and make room for more jigs. but i hate finesse fishing, i consider myself a power fisherman. i love big baits and heavy line. aside from topwater fishing there is nothing i like more than throwing crankbaits and jigs or flipping and pitching soft plastics in heavy cover. so my "stay away" would be finesse fishing. when it comes down to it i will dropshot or throw a shakeyhead if i have to, and i must admit i love watching bass eat my dropshot on my graph but i just hate slowing down and finesse fishing....... more of a stay away technique than a bait but that's my answer anyways.

spinnerbaits because I don't fish them enough to figure out how to effectly catch fish on them if they aren't jumping on them from the get go.Carolina rigging is something I don't do real well.I rely on a cotton candy centepede on a lightweight carolina rig set up.Yes, it is very effective at times but I wouldn't say I am comfortable fishing that style.Ivan

Lipless cranks are a little tricky. I use them in the spring post spawn and in the fall. I like to work them over submerged weedbeds just ticking the tops of the weeds, then ripping the Trap up and out. Then repeat. The advantage of using a lipless crankbait this way over a crankbait is that they sink when not reeled so you can get down to the depth you need to be at without having to constantly change lures.

As for Drop Shoting, it's my go to presentation. Spend some time watching Kevin's drop shot video. Outside of early spring I can't think of a time I can't drop shot effectively and catch some solid Bass unless the wind is really howling. Then it's real tough fishing out of a rowboat.

Where and when are you using them? I've had great success working spinnerbaits over weeds, along the out and inside weed edge, on either side of laydowns, rock walls, and submerged boulders. During pre-spawn their deadly worked from the shore back to the boat. Like a crankbait, the more stuff you bump and bang into, then pause for a second or two, you'll start to get strikes, and some real nasty ones at that.

The most interesting part of this is that almost every bait listed as a stay away for some is a goto for othe
