Getting ready for football season?
HeyA fellas. s a few of y'all know already, I'm trying out for my High Schools football team this year. As of now, I'm a center, right or left guard. Before I wanna have ANY hope, I need to build my legs up, get faster, and build some endurance. Right now I'm doing calf exercises, Squats, with either 20lb, 50lb or 70lb. Most of the time the 20, or 50. weights on me. I'm also gonna start jogging just before dark. I'm also doing other exercises like jumping jacks, crunches (with, and without weights), etc, and lifting weights in general (curls, benching, etc.). I'm also gonna be going to my schools gym over the summer.
So anyways, what are somethings that y'all have done getting ready to for football season. Any tips are appreciated!

I've been getting up at 5 in the morning for a few beers, to get my tolerance up.
Also been lifting curls regularly, as in cheese curls. No surrender this fall.. |

If FL. is anything like TX. you need to start jogging and running sprints at 4:00 in the afternoon during the summer. It's gonna be hotter than snot when 2 a days roll around late summer. You need to build up some strength but endurance is going to be just as critical.

Boss, you're already doin way more than I did for the foozball season.
I will give you 1 invaluable tip though. I learned this the hard way, while gearing up for the season. Don't, and I'm gonna repeat that, DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! apply Ben-Gay to your thighs after a run. Fumes rise, my man, fumes rise........

The weight room at the school will be your best friend man , just lift and run as much as you can , and then repeat and repeat and repeat ect..............

While I agree with Jim, it is important that you are lifting properly. If you have not spent much time around a weight room, you can really hurt your self by lifting wrong.
And since no one else mentioned it, I do believe that pushing a lawn mower will help greatly with the endurance.

Another more memorable event was when I was lifting in my high school weightroom and a guy power cleaning fell backwards and broke both wrists and forearms. His spot luckily was paying enough attention to roll the bar off of him.

Thanks! Not gonna be lifting anything heavy enough to need a spot though. Prolly nothing over 100, and if I do, I'll get my older bro to spot me.

BassBoss, you may want to hit 3dkicker up with a PM he is very knowledgeable in this area and has been generous with his know-how in the past.

Once you're done with the puke though it'll be a blast.

ok, here is my little tid bit of info to help ya a little. ever heard of WALTER PAYTON? well he trained by running up a hil several times a day, really built up his endurance and legs as well as his back. IF there is ANY kind of hill, enbankment THAT IS AT least 20 FT TO THE TOP. Run to the top as many times and as fast as you can per day. if oyu do it say.....10 times a day for a week, go for 15 the next week. and so on and so forth. if you get to feeling like it is too easy, strap on a back pack filled with sand. wear heavy boots too.

It doesn't have to be a hill. If you have any sort of stadiums around there, running the stairs is a great workout too. We used to do that fairly often at the football stadium as part of our "pitchers workout routine" for baseball practice in college. Run hard up the stairs at one end, jog the length of the bleachers to the other end, down those stairs, back to the other end and repeat as many times as your workout plan says to.

Man....I remember group workouts for football as a freshman in high school. The first day I puked a couple of times at least. But there were so many guys puking, it almost became an inside joke everyone was in on. If you didn't puke, you weren't trying hard enough.
Funny thing is...I survived workouts and practices, only to quit the team when they refused to get me a pair of cleats that fit properly. Come on, I couldn't have been the only high school freshman to wear 16's. I wore some raggedy-a$$ pair of 40 year old size 18's for a couple of practices, and then told them to pound sand.

Sammy if you really want to work on your legs, balance and speed...I highly suggest you look into plyometric exercises.....You'll hate them...but love em!

Yes, after I grew up and looked back on it, it became very clear to me the coach wasn't really looking for the guys with the most physical stamina...that can be developed. He was looking for the guys who wouldn't quit, no matter what. Oh well, I guess I failed that test! LOL
Unfortunately, I had an abusive stepfather at the time, so I wasn't about to volunteer for yet one more 45 year old jerk telling me what a loser I was haha.
