Default Sat. on the river

As Captain Mike stated things were a little off on the river this weekend. We found outgoing tide all day long even though it was supposed to be incoming for the first half. Hit some areas and picked up a bass here and there. Think I've got them figured out for the upcoming tournament. We'll have to see if they hold in their current patterns. Hopefully they progress to the next stage. If so it'll be a great weekend !!

Chatterbait, Zoom speed worm, RI skinny dipper (new big version) and Dave's jig/pig caught them for me. My buddy caught his on Zoom lizard and Berkley swim bait.

Running into computer issues....can't post pics will have to try again tomorrow. Stupid 'puter.

Good luck in the upcoming tourney. All we have on the coast here are tidal rivers, not really any lakes. I swear bass in rivers seem much harder to keep up with than in other waters.

I'm smart enough to be dangerous......

Here's some May river largemouth chunks.....Pads, grass, wood (buddy claims he lost an 8lber off laydown ), and spatterdock all held fish.

When I was down a couple weeks ago, I threw a small square bill crankbait (Diawa Peanut, red) into the emerging pads like you have in the first picture. Diawa makes the Peanut in two versions - you want the short bill version. That bait comes through those pads pretty easily and produced fish. That presentation has worked for me several times in the spring. I'd throw it to the edge of the heavy grass behind the pads (in the 1st picture) and run it out through the pads. It's a running joke with my partner that I always have my peanuts with me when fishing the Potomac in the spring.

Couldn't get them to eat a crankbait that day. Threw a square bill a bunch but nothing. I'll keep the Peanuts in mind for the pads. I've seen them but just haven't picked one up. Chatterbait comes through those pads pretty easy too. I do better on this set flipping or pitching baits.
The distance between the pads and the grass is a little more than what the pic shows and would be very long cast to make. Pulled that fish off the outside edge (this side) of the pads on a worm. Nice keeper too.

You'd have a great time fishing with him!!! His boat, truck, and everything he owns is blue and red and "lil miss" written all over it. I have a great time messing with him about his school.
He's related to Walt Cary, Walt's Poppers, who's known for his bugs that he made for 50 years. Walt also created a firetiger color spinnerbait (possibly was the first) that caught many fish on the river and helped a couple big name pros win tournaments back in the 80's.

If the two of you were on the same boat I'd have to carry a big stick and keep the two of you separated!!!! It still would be a lot of fun though.

Uncle Walt sold the popping bug business but still makes them for a select few clients only. He found the last four firetiger spinnerbait bodies that he had and made his original skirt for them and gave them to his nephew and me. They had been in a box for 15 years or so. I had to add the swivel and blades because he no longer had any. I don't think I'll ever use the spinnerbaits or popping bugs he made for me. They are sweeeeet baits.
