Ahhh, make sure it's aquarium safe silicone as the most of it sold at HD and Lowes is not.

GE Type I or type II silicone works fine. I'm sure you want clear, but they've got it in anything from black to clear to bronze to almond. Lots of choices.
I've got a couple crayfish in a small 10gal tank. I'll get some pics if I can get one of the buggers out from hiddin' under their favorite rock. BB

The mold/midlew inhibitor is very controversial. I've used GE II (the one with it) for a tank I kept some a frog it, and didn't see any negative results. Although, it is a lot different than an aquarium. So use GE type I, and you'll be fine. I don't know about sink silicone or whatever, but if I were you, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Lowes and Home depot should both Carry it.

It's rather not an opinion base thing since ANY SW aquarium WILL NOT survive with that stuff. So I can without a doubt say it can't help in a FW aquarium.

I have a 60 gal. It has 2 bio wheel 330gph back filters and a reverse under gravel system with 2 290gph power heads, I'm pushing 1240gph thru the tank 24 hours a day. I have had bass and gills in a tank this size but they become boring and are not really good for research purposes. The fish will become conditioned to you and will eat at almost any time you wanna feed it, it will no longer have to hunt prey and will become lazy. as for keeping the tank nice looking, forget about it. The bass will destroy any decoration you try to have. Mr Bass will also grow very quickly and become stunted in a 30 gal tank, meaning that his head and eyes will continue to grow and his body will hit a certian size and not get any bigger. If i was gonna keep a bass i would talk to the local fish hatchery and get 3 when they were very small and raise them to bout 3-4" and cut them loose in a pond or lake.
the reason that most fish die is the alkility and amonia of the water gets to be to much for the fish (fish poop alot)and he cant breathe so fresh water is a must, you need to do a 30% water change every week to keep the toxins to a manageable level. You will also need to have a few chemicals around to neutralize the chlorine and nitrates that accumulate in the water. As far as the cracks and leaks, well its just not a good idea to silicone a crack have the glass replaced, Lowes has aquarium safe sealant. it cost bout 3 bucks and takes 48 hrs to dry. The plywood idea is a good 1 just to be safe. got any more ?'s pm me, i'll be happy to help these are a few of my smaller tanks
