Default Chickahominy Lake and River

The Chick is a tributary of the James river and is loaded with cypress trees, marsh vegetation, pads and grass. The river has a small dam that creates a small lake that holds bass, crappie, bowfin, pickerel, gar, and bluegill. The river is loaded with cypress trees as well as arrowhead pads, elephant ear pads, hydrilla and many different types of grasses.

I fished two days last weekend and caught a few nice bass. Fishing was tough on both the lake and river for some reason. This time of year the river should be producing 50 fish days but not last weekend. I ended up with only 8 keepers that weighed 13 pounds but was still enough to end up in second place. I did lose two fish that would have won it and I learned a lesson on both of them.

Check out the scenery......of course the last one is Horney Toad heaven!!!

Horny toad heaven. Love the sound of that. I can see your toad tracks in the slop. My favorite kind of fishing. Would love to fish cypress trees sometime.

Seriously consider it! Although only one town in VA made the most recent Top 200 places to live in the US it does kick butt in fishing and hunting. The Potomac and James Rivers are two of the best in the country for bass and catfish plus there are many more small rivers to fish. Trout fishing streams are good. Smallmouths too. The main lakes here include Smith Mt, Buggs, Gaston (all BASS and FLW tournament locations) plus a bunch of other small lakes (like Anna).
Saltwater fishing is very good too. We've got the Cheseapeake Bay to fish for striper, blue, flounder and many others. The world record croaker was caught not far from Capt Mike's place.
Hunting is pretty good too. Deer, turkey, and bear are here along with all the normal small game species.

Wow!

SWEET looking waters you got there man! Not sure how I'd attack it! Definitely the frog. And maybe a jig pitched around there!

AWESOME spot Smitty!

How the fishing pressure there?

Not a lot of pressure. Jigs aren't the best since it's only 2-3 feet deep and the bottom is covered with a nasty algae that slimes the baits and line. Takes a while to remove from the bait. Weightless is the way to go when fishing shallow.

I caught a couple pickerel, 1 bowfin (6.5lbs), and two bass out of that area on a chatterbait and horny toad.
