Default Important info about Mississippi...

For your edification, I will share some Mississippi knowledge with you. These could probably apply to Louisiana, Alabama, and maybe Georgia, too...

Possums sleep in the middle of the road with their feet in the air.

There are 5,000 types of snakes on earth and 4,998 live in Mississippi.

There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 live in Mississippi plus a couple no one's seen before.

Onced and Twiced are words.

It is not a shopping cart; it is a buggy.

People actually grow and eat okra.

'Fixinto' is one word.

There is no such thing as 'lunch.' There is only dinner and then there is supper.

Iced tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you're two. We do like a little tea with our sugar!

Backurds and forwurds mean 'I know everything about you .

Djeet? is actually a phrase meaning 'Did you eat ?'

You don't have to wear a watch because it doesn't matter what time it is. You work until you're done or it's too dark to see.

You don't PUSH buttons, you MASH them.

You measure distance in minutes.

You've ever had to switch from 'heat' to 'A/C' in the same day.

'Fix' is a verb. Example: 'I'm fixing to go to the store.'

All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, insect or animal.

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

You know what a 'DAWG' is.

You carry jumper cables in your car . . . for your OWN car.

There are only four spices: salt, pepper, Tabasco and ketchup.

The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but require 6 pages for local gossip and sports.

The first day of deer season is a national holiday.

100 degrees Fahrenheit 'a little warm.'

We have four seasons: Almost Summer, summer, still summer and Christmas.

Going to Wal-mart is a favorite past time known as 'goin Wal-martin' or off to 'Wally World.'

A cool snap (below 70 degrees) is good pinto-bean weather.

A carbonated soft dr ink isn't a soda, cola or pop . . . it's a Coke, regardless of brand or flavor. Example: 'What kinda coke you want?'

Fried catfish is the other white meat.

We don't need no stinking driver's license . . . if our mama says we can drive, we can drive.

Means the same a this and that.
ie..
I've got to go to the race today and do this and that.
or
I've got to go to the race today and what not.

Though what-nots are also the little do-dads that one keeps laying around. For example if you were to break a spring or something in your reel and my father had been around, he'd likely had a spring or little screw or nut that'd work cause he always had a bunch of do-dads or what-nots in his pocket. Or those little figurines that mama has on shelves and anywhere she can find to stick one, those are do-dads or what-nots.

Hope that helps and what not.

Naw, man, we got "trunks" down here. Boots is fer feet, not cars. Actually, we probably have more trucks than cars, so we usually refer to the "back of the truck." Although that gets confusing when you have an extended cab...Back of the truck, as in bed, or back of the truck, as in inside but behind the front seat?

And 3D, "and what not" refers to "miscellaneous things that aren't really worth listing." Like 1/4Stick said.
"I'm going to the store to get some charcoal and what not." In this case, it could refer to lighter fluid, beer, paper plates, etc...

One of my favorite southern words is Yanto [sp?] . As in: "we're all going fishing yeserday, yanto?" I just love how you can combine "You Want To?" into one word.

I "wash". I know a lot of people that "worsh", though. They buy their "worshing" stuff at "Wal-Mark", off the shelf that's about 4 feet in "heighth."

I don't know how to respond to that one. It's definitely one I've never heard before. I'd have thought it was something sexual if it wasn't for the context clue.

Oh, and I was just in Worshington D.C. the other day. Anyone ever been there?

No that would be wiennie-diddles.

So far I've managed to keep away from DC, but I have been tinkering with running for prez as of late. There's plenty of dingbats in the race now, one more won't make a difference.
