Default reel test

i took a lil fishin trip today using just 5 set ups..first i loaded five reels on five matching 7 foot fenwick intercostal mh rods..all reels for this test were loaded with 12 pound ande mono.

the reels used were:

quantum energy pt tour edtion
pflueger trion
penn pursuit
okuma al 200
diawa advantage hsta

all set ups were rigged with an 3/8oz tandum blade spinner bait.

i figured that 2 mag braking systems and 3 centrifugal braking sytems were goin to be a challange..

i have a casting range at my house-don't everybody- from the bare spot to a power wire that goes to an out building is 50 yards-laser ranged- the lip of the bank is 70 yards -again laser ranged- throwing into a 5 mph head wind.

all distances were ranged using a bushnell elite 1500

first up the battered quatum pt tour edtion three cast average was 65 yards.
the team diawa putting up a 3 cast average of 68 yards
then the centrifugal reels-all set with 2 brakes on-

the beat up pflueger trion made a 3 cast average of 61 yards.
the penn pursuit made a 3 cast average of 65 yards.
the spankin new okuma made 3 cast average of 66 yards.

the team diawa was a bit of a suprise -it's normaly my pitching reel-

i loaded up the kayak and went to the big over flow pond at newsome-on tuckertown lake-
i tested the reels fishing from my yak thru hyrdilla and heavy grass. catchin several bass the drag on both the penn and okuma surpassed anything the other three could put forth.they ARE intrcoastal reels after all..

i dunked all five reels at the end of the my yak cruise. got home got the sloopy wet reels out and hit the casting range again.
after going thru all the reels again 3 cast averages only one changed that was the pflueger trion it gained 1 yard -it was the oldest reel of the bunch-

not really shocked at the penn reel performance compared to the diawa and quatum. bit suprised by the trion in the lackin of distance-it may have been a lubercation problem-when the okuma and the team diawa both hit the lip one of the diawa went over the lip. i knew i was on to some thing..

while not as smooth as the quatum the okuma reel performed very well for a $70 reel now comes the longevity test..

Cool test, Zook. I like your information posts like this, always cool.

Heck, I'm lucky to get 45-50 yds. with a 1/2-ounce Carolina Rig, let alone 65+ yds.!

Yeah, I'd say I might get that as well with a 1 OUNCE weight...

I also need to 'back-off' my backing a tad. As I said, I was gettin 40-50 yards, and had about one to two full wraps left on the spool. Maybe take a few yards of backing off. Then again, I don't think I'll be using those 1-ounce Tungsten weights.

Zook, where you get 'em for $3?? I've only seen that size for about 6 bucks a pop. Very interesting test, I would have expected more of the quantum, maybe they're just talked up a lot.

good to know. I guess the Tru-Tungsten ones are a waste of money then, huh.

Zooker, what . . . no Shimanos? Are you one of those anti-Shimano guys? In all fairness, at least one Shimano should have been included in the test (just so everything is everything is equal, right).

Zooker, maybe I shouldn't have posted the preceding post. My recollection is that some time ago there was a major bloodbath from the anti-Shimano gang. But, I just couldn't help myself. I hope you won't be posting one of the "can of worms" pictures.
