Post June 6, 2008; Lake Corpus Christi

On June 6, 2008, I will be taking a fishing trip to Lake Corpus Christi. it will be the first time that I take my boat up there, I never actually fished that lake with lures... has anyone fished it? What color lures do I use, and what type. Heres a link to the Lake Info,
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat...orpus_christi/

Thanks,

-Stevo

Steve,

As the details provided in...
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat...orpus_christi/
reveal, Summer is not the optimum time to be on that lake, so far as bassfishing success is concerned. Also to be considered is the potential for a lot of "recreational" (See: Idiots) boat traffic.
Lake CC, formerly referred to as Lake Mathis, is a relatively shallow lake and there are some areas that can be hazardous. The water is not so clear as in our highland lakes; Canyon. Travis, etc., so hazards are not so easily spotted. Be certain to wear POLARIZED glasses and be very cautious.
Were I you I'd make an effort to be on the water pre-dawn (Be careful!) and work vegetation and what stumpy areas that may remain with topwater plugs, buZZZZZZbaits, toads, and black spinnerbaits with large Colorado blades, an ideal example of that being the Strike King Midnight Special in Black/Blue. Later, Senko/TikiStik/YUM Dingers would be a good choice, fished slowly.
I've not fished that lake...by choice...in a long time but I'm confident that the recommendations above are valid, especially so far as safety is concerned.
Good luck.

Lancer6

PS: Don't leave ANYTHING of value in your vehicle at Lake CC!

sounds to me from Lancer's opinion....you'd be better off going to choke canyon lake it's not too far from this....and there are hawgs to be had in that lake....it's gorgeous.....
but, then again this is just my 2cents worth too......

Stevo-I've fished it once. One phrase comes to mind: Chocolate milk. It was the muddiest lake I have ever fished. We caught them on watermelon/chartreuse swirl Tiki Sticks and one yacked up a crawfish, so that will give you a starting place. I agree with the Choke canyon recommendation-a MUCH better lake IMO.

Would dark colors, i.e. black, blue, pumpseed work with char. tails? What will work early in the mornin' and late in the afternoon. During mid day (2pm-5pm) I will primarilly be fishing for crappie (dinner!!!)

I went to Academy today... I bought a variety of lures! I bought many tubes, YUM tubes (black with chart. tails), Senkos (chart with black glitter), crankbaits (fire tiger colors), topwaters (fire tiger colors). i am hoping that these colors work for the murky to clear waters of Lake Corpus Christi.

any comments, suggestions on fishing them?

p.s. How do you rig the tubes, (hooks????)

Stevo, if you get clear water in Lake Corpus Christi you are doing REAL good. Like I said in an earlier post, when I fished it it looked like chocolate milk.

Good luck, buddy!

Let us know how you did.

Exclamation

Stevomacaroni,

I've checked the forecast for Saturday as well. The winds will be up and, given the flat terrain circa LCC, as compared to the Highland Lakes environment, my recommendation is...(Drum roll, please.)...STAY HOME!
Y'see, LCC is a rather shallow lake. High winds will increase turbidity therein, making lure fishing all the more unlikely to be successful. High winds will, in this type of terrain, increase the height of waves compared to the sheltered areas usually to be found on most Highland lakes. High winds+Shallow water usually = some rough boating. Also, the increased turbidity will conceal hazards to hull and prop that might otherwise be detectable. Even a normally mundane chore such as getting the barge back on the trailer can turn into a dangerous and costly nightmare under the expected conditions.
Add to the above the wear and tear on the trollmotor, batteries, and you and it ain't looking good.

Inasmuch, so I gather, that you are unfamiliar with the lake, this is all the more reason to abort the mission and stay home, lie on the couch, watch porn tapes, and eat Cheetos(TM) That seems to work for some of the other guys here. (I'm a Beer Nuts[TM] guy. At least I was when I had a full array of dentition and before the dog are my favorite video..."Conchita Does Corpus".)
While a cancelled trip is always a heartbreak (unless Roland Martin was to be your co-angler,) an unsuccessful, stressful, and possible dangerous outing is one that is best not experienced.
If you DO have a partner scheduled and he urges you to go on with the plan, just remember this; He won't be there when it comes time to pay for the destroyed prop and/or lower unit.
Sorry to precipitate on your processional (See: Rain/Parade.) but your safety is my foremost concern.
There will be more opportunities, Grasshopper, there will be more.

Report....

June 6, 2008
Lake Corpus Christi

I arrived there at around 4 pm. we set up camp, and got settled. At around 9pm we went to the fishing pier where I heard the bite was good. I threw minnows and cranks, I caught 9 White bass, along with 2 catfish. The next morning, we set out for boating at around 6am, there were clouds and wind in the area. We went to an area were submerged trees and rocks were present. I fished a small jig for about 45min, I had 9 bites, but no success in bringing 'em in. Next I switched to a senko... and fished it off a tree, I caught a 15 in LM bass, boy did that sucker hit hard! Then I decided to switch to a crankbait, I never really fished 'em b4.... I FOUND MY FAVORITE type of lure! I fished this log witha rapala 6ft diver (firetiger), on my second retrieve, I was reeling it in, all of a sudden I felt it stop.."Oh NO! it's stuck" so I just started to reel it in more, and more, and more, then a huge 20in+ flish jumped from the water and spit the lure OUT!! "dang!" So I decided to fish it some more, I ended up catchin 3 more LM bass within 10 min (14in and 16in). Then I threw out another color, shad colors (silver, blue). I caught 4 more bass including a crappie. All in which were larger than 14in (crappie was about 15). Then I decided to fish a rattletrap I caught a large 15in crappie. We headed in after that. Saturday night, we decided to fish the pier again, I caught about 5 fish, 3bass and 2 cats. It was an awesome fishing trip! However tradgedy di strike within this weekend, a man drowned while swimming saturday afternoon. RIP.

P.S. weather was great... water calrity was awesome, nearly clear!!! Although it was supposed to be bad (weather) it worked out great!

Thumbs up

Steve,

I've never been happier to have guessed wrong. I'm delighted (and slightly jealous) for you. It's nice to read such a positive report.
Moreover, I'm pleased that there were no mishaps.
