What size hook would you use?
For a 4" lizard?
For a 5" lizard? |

1/0 would work for both. I may even jump it to 2/0 for the 5-inch lizard.

It depends on how the lizard is going to be fished. If t-rigging, I would probably use a 2/0 or 3/0 for both, if c-rigging, I might drop down to a 1/0 or 2/0.

Texas Rigged on both. Just trying to get a feel of others thoughts. I use a lot of 3/0 & 4/0 for most worms.

well i guess i am different cause i use both the 4 and 5. texas rigged. if the lizzard is over 6" and over i deffinantly use a 5. sometimes use a 5 on a 6". but mostly use a 4 on 6". shorter lizzards i go with the 3.

I'd probably use 3/0. I generally don't use small than that unless it's on finesse worms or something very small.

I would put a 4 inch lizard on a 2/0 hook and a 5" lizard on a 3/0 hook.

2/0 for the 4" and 3/0 for the 5" both with a STRAIGHT SHANK HOOK love straight shank hooks for texas riggs, especially lizards. The come through cover way better IMO then EWG or off set, very good hook up ratio too.

3/0 for both. I use Gamakatsu or Trokar 3/0 EWG for any bait until I get to magnum size baits then I go to a 5/0.

I don't use anything less than 3/0 hook for my plastics. I have just seen a higher hook up ratio using larger hooks. So to answer the question, 3/0 for 4" & 5" , but sometimes I'll go with a 4/0 on 5" baits.

I grew up fishing smallmouth and used 1/0 hooks for about everything. When I started fishing for more largemouth I kept the same size hook for awhile, then moved up to a 2/0. Last summer I started fishing more frogs on a 5/0 EWG hook and used the same hooks on a creature bait and even a 6" ribbon-tail worm. By fall I felt more comfortable with bigger EWG hooks: anywhere from 2/0 to 5/0. (2/0 seems small now)
A 4" lizard is pretty small; I'd probably use a 2/0, but would feel comfortable with anywhere from 1/0 to 3/0. For the 5" lizzard I'd probably use a 3/0, but would be comfortable with anything from 2/0 to 4/0. I'd probably tie on a 3/0 hook and feel comfortable fishing both lizards on the same set-up. Honestly I don't think there is a whole lot of difference between a 4" and a 5" lizzard and I probably wouldn't carry both sizes in my tackle box, but that's just me. With the EWG hooks, last year I started Tex-posing more, and true Texas-rigging less. (Texas rigging having the point imbedded in the lure, where the Tex-posed is pushed all the way through the bait. I really like the shape of the EWG hooks for Tex-posing.) Last edited by IowaBasser; 01-06-12 at 08:50 AM. |

depends on what im fishing. if i want a lot of bait movement i will go with a 1/0 but normally a 2/0 on both. unless i miss a couple that have hit the tail end then i go a little bigger.
remember the bigger the hook the less action your bait gets. for a c-rig i will use a bigger hook bc its not the movement of the bait that is entising more the sound and disturbance of the weight. |
