Default Why do I have to learn the hard way?

ok, new lesson learned. Don't EVER, EVER, EVER grab a three pound large mouth by the jaw while he still has a face full of Bomber crankbait! Especially if you are out on the water by yourself. It took him exactly one headshake to ruin my morning. All I can say is DAMN THAT HURT!! I took the picture AFTER I turned the hook 180 degrees and shoved it out the top of my finger.

Pictures like that are the reason I do NOT lip a bass with a treble hook bait in its mouth. I'll do it with a single hook but I use a net, gripper, or lift the bass into the boat by the line (or have my co-angler lip it ), then grab it behind the head and remove those nasty trebles with pliers. I do all I can to avoid my fingers/hand anywhere near hooks when removing a lure from a fish. It's also a reason I do not like pulling lures back from snagged tree limbs (yes that happens occasionally ) - go and get it, don't yank on it and have it come flying back at the boat.

Ouch! That's a great reminder to all fishermen to keep your tetanus shots up to date.

After my friend had a small pike put a treble into his hand about 5 years ago, I'm the same way, Bruce. I don't catch many fish on treble-hook lures since I don't use them real often, but I never get my hands anywhere near the trebles until they're out of the fish...gripper to hold the fish and pliers to remove the hooks....every single time no matter what size the fish is.

OWEE! OWEE! OWEE!

Ya I regretfully have done that with a lipless.

Had to go too the Urgent Care Unit to get it removed because I was alone fishing.
I had 3 poles and a soft sider tackle bag open with some scattered lures on a bench. Took me 5 mins just to close the thing and another 5 to get the rods (3) together and situated so I could carry everything back to the car.
Luckily my wire cutters were SAFELY HOME IN ANOTHER TACKLE PACK. Else it would of taken even longer!
I then had to drive 10 miles in the car...ya with the lure still hooked in my thumb to get to UC.

I got there and at the check in desk the nurse asked me if she could help me.
I told her, " I'm in kind of a hurry cause I've been fishing all day without a bite and finally now when they started biting, my dang lure gets all tangled up." She looks at me kind of puzzled....until I lifted my hand up to scratch my forehead.
So a nurse comes and takes me back to a room.
She's prepping the thumb and getting the tools together to remove the lure which again was still attached to the treble.
The Doc comes and is checking the hand over.
He turns and looks at me and says, " Is this lure important to you?"
Stunned, I replied the same story I told at the desk. followed by, "Why do you ask?"
He says, " Because I'm going to have too cut the treble from the lure so I don't get stuck by the otherone."
I replied "FINE WITH ME", seeing the dang thing hurt more than one would think.
Nurse goes to the table puts on gloves and grabs a scalple and I KNOW IT'S TIME FOR ME TOO LOOK THE OTHER WAY.
I'm not real fond of blood, especially when it's mine!!!!
The nurse is handing the Doc the scalple and he says,
"No I don't need that just grab me a piece of floss." "Let me show you a trick".
No way in hell am I looking now to see whats going on!!!!!

I feel a slight quick shot of a really small amount of pain.
And the Doc says, "DONE"
I look over and sure enough the treble is hanging from the floss.

This is what he did.

He used something else to sterilize though.

I now carry one of these because wading and shorebusting, a grabber becomes clumsy.

Crazy thing is, I had to cross the river to get to the UC.......
so I had to stop and throw a few.
Thank the Lord it got dark and I could call it quits!

That's creepy. Not the hook in the finger, but the fact that I had the same thing happen to me with the same bait, and the same color.

Once I had one stuck in the sinew above the nose between the eyes, yep snagged it in swift current bent the pole shot like 90mph, another time a spot jumped just as I lipped it -bill dance method(line wrap and jerk) and another person got it out.
Belly land they freeze, but use my forceps to get the hooks out prior to paws grabbing or if hooked decent flip.

Kory, that is some kind of bad juju. If I hadn't caught a small boat full of large mouth and spots on that model and color I would swear off it. I had to cut the hook to get it out, and I replaced it with a bright red Eagle Claw #6 treble. Now, I can't say the red hook has made it any more effective, but it sure makes me tremble a little every time I see it tied on my rod.

I wasn't even as lucky as you. I had this happen in the middle of a tournament (which we were struggling in) and it was at a terrible time. I caught a few fish on a few consecutive cast' and one was a keeper. I finally figured something out and had a little momentum going until the keeper buried the hook in my finger..........while he was on the other hook LOL. After a little work I was able to get him into the livewell and dig out the braided line for the good old fashioned hook removal trick. Problem there was my wife was my partner and she had never seen the trick done before. Against my better judgment I talked her through how to do it and got line prepared on the hook. I think the only part she understood was the "yank hard" part. I was nowhere near ready and I needed to get on the trolling motor to move the boat so I said "ok hold on", but she heard "ok" and yanked.........hard! Then for some reason "she" started crying LOL. I tried to get her to try again but this time wait until I had everything ready, however she wasn't willing to give it another go. We ran into the nearest town to a DR. office and had them remove it, then we flew back to the boat to finish out the tournament.

Either having it happen again (GOD forbid) or not being able to get it out at all. Either one would make me a Unhappy Old Hooker!!

Fishing with three of us in my 17.5 Bass Tracker I was setting up front throwing a plastic worm. Suddenly something smacks me on the side of the head and my cap is falling off my head. I reach up to catch my cap and then feel my hand get jerked backwards. Well the guy in the middle had a errant cast with a plug that held two treble hooks. When he hit me side the head (first mistake) he then jerked the plug back away from me (second mistake). I looked at my hand which showed I had two hooks in the thumb and each was buried past the barb, probably resting against the bone. Errant casting buddy looked over my shoulder and must have apologized 10 times. I was ticked off but I also felt bad for him. So I remained cool and polite, told him it was OK as he didn't do it on purpose (I think). I told him to hand me my needle nose pliers and as I was cutting the hooks from the plug he was wiping the side of my neck ??? Yeah, one of the hooks had scratched my neck and it was bleeding like a stuck pig. I decided I would pull the hooks out even if I had to tie a line to my truck bumper and yank them out. Buddy in the back seat kept fishing and had to tell me same thing happened to him and he got a bill for $600 from emergency room. That made me pull and twist harder on the hooks. Suddenly one popped out and after about three more minutes the other one popped out. I told "errant caster" to get my first aid kit from under the seat and wrapped my hand up to stop the bleeding (it was also sliced open). "Errant caster" bought my lunch and kept apologizing. I told him to stop beating himself up because in a month it would be healed up. When I got home I went to my doc and just held up my hand to the receptionist. She asked if it was the result of a power saw. I said no it was rusty fish hooks. Anyway the doc said I didn't need stitches, gave me an antibiotic Rx and asked how long since my last tetanus shot. Today I can't find a scar. Now I only fish with two anglers in my boat and I only use shiners. Hook me once shame on you, hook me twice shame on me
