Another stupid boating question . . .
The winch on my new boat does not lock in place. When I reel it in it will just loosen up if the handle is turned the opposite way. This still happens even when I turn the metal piece up. There are actually two metal gear wheels and I am wondering if there should be another metal piece for the other gear wheel which would lock the winch in place. Is the winch supposed to lock in place? Does this question make any sense?

Trailer says "Manufactured by: Fabrique Par; Bear Trailer Inc" There is a metal switch but it only engages with the one gear wheel and doesn't lock up the winch. The winch is supposed to lock up, right?

On mine there is a lever that flips up to lock into the teeth of the gear so that it will not unwind. Maybe also a good idea to get one of those safety chains/cables too. I want to get one but not sure where to find it; might just make one.

W2BF, on mine you flip the lever back away from the boat to disengage and forward to engage. This may be a Homer Simpson D'OH, but you have to flip the lever forward manually to engage it-it doesn't engage like a reel when you turn the handle

I figured out the answer (I think). The strap to the winch was rolled up incorrectly and was coming off the bottom instead of the top. To "fix it", I pulled out all of the strap and rewound it the opposite way. Now the winch properly snugs up the strap and tightens. Thanks everyone for helping me on this stupid boating question. I am sure I will come up with some more stupid questions within the next few weeks.

Bama, can you believe it . . . hard to believe that the trailer came with the strap wound backwards. Glad it is "fixed". If this is the worst problem that I have, I can live with it.

W2BF, it is a learning curve-as time goes on you will learn more and more and get better and better. When I first got mine I couldn't back it up straight for nothing. Now it is second nature.

Rebbasser, one word to describe my trailer driving ability . . . "****ty".
I mean, I really suck. Although I am glad not to be that guy in waders, in all likelihood, I will become known as the guy that clogs up the ramp because he can't back up his trailer. |

Zooker, you know what they say "necessity is the mother of invention" (I think this statement is applicable). Hopefully, over time, I will get better, but right now I am just ****ty at driving this thing. I might as well blindfold myself when I am backing up.

I have a CDL drivers liscence and here is a trick that I learned from driving a big truck.
Put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel, what ever direction you want the boat to go move your hand that way. give that a try and see if it helps. |

back is right, i am a cdl driver too. that works very well. also.....if you have a riding mower, and a trailer or somethn. use it to pratice backing up. if you can back a mower with something on the back, you can back anything.
