Default July 16th Report

Had some real nice warm weather and a fast incoming tide. Spotted several snakeheads just do the lazy swim back into the pads but could get them to bite. After a few missed hits we went about an hour , maybe two and nothing and the young man of the father and son crew said those immortal words.."Capt Mike have you ever been skunked?" I quickly said no with my most honest face I could muster..
They where tired of all the casting and no action. I asked if I could make a cast and the young handed me the rod.. first cast a snakehead slams my frog and misses. I cast back and bingo he eats my frog and hooked up.
So we hit some other areas and nada happens. So we change over to poppers as the tide raced out very fast. Well that worked very well.

We brought back the BANDITO..

It's goo to hear the fish are biting. (of course, fro someone who "never" gets skunked, I guess that's not unusual)
I am sitting in the airport right now, waiting to fly to D.C. and from there, drive to Pax River. I hope to get a little fishing in, but of course, the main thing is the job.

Has anyone ever fished the "Saint Mary's Lake" reservoir?

Yes Capt Dave has fished it a lot. I have never..It has a large population of small bass. They changed the regs to create a trophy lake a few years ago. But it is still a work in progress.

Thanks. I'll be going there tomorrow afternoon, and hopefully getting some casts in from the shore/shallow water. No boat allowed on the plane, so I couldn't bring mine with me.

Capt, got a question for you. After all the negative press and dire warnings about the snakehead invasion, do you feel it was over played? I mean, often I read your posts and see where no one is hooking up with a snakehead, or they are following and not striking. But based on everything the press and others warned us about, one would think snakeheads were going to jump into anglers boats and devour anglers. That our fisheries would be exterminated by snakeheads. Do you think they are detrimental to our fisheries or simply another option to fish for?

Well, two evenings of fishing St. Mary's Lake. Nice, that no engines are allowed. Waded the shoreline, and only once did I get into deep muck. Most of it was nice, hard packed sand or shell/rock. Water temps in the wading depths were bathwater to room temperature (no thermometer, just legs) so a bit warm for "Northern" waters, I'd think.

No bass, but the lake is definitely a healthy body of water.

Well Keith they are very skiddish and if a bird fly's over they dig down in the grass. If a lure lands too close they dig down in the grass. If you drop something in the boat they dig down in the grass. If the wind is blowing the pads around they dig down in the grass. They do not bite after dark. They eat mostly killy minnows and that is about 83% of there diet. However every fish eats them. Now #2 on the food source for LGMouth. They can have up to 5 spawns in the summer. But the number that survive the bluegill and white perch attacks is very low. Once they are about 4 inches the LGMouth eat them until they hit 12 inches. Then the birds eat them like crazy.

They are super fighters and strong as hell. They jump like a marlin sideways 5 to 9 feet.

They are tasty.

I think if aliens landed in Houston Texas they would be shot for being invasive.. humans as species hate change and will try to make mother nature bend to there will.

Silly humans put clothes on there women...
