Default Joe Wheeler

Does anyone fish the Tennesse River below Joe Wheeler Dam? I'm looking for information about the bass fishing there.

Yes. "The Smallmouth capital of the World" is what it has been nicknamed.

Below wheeler dam is wilson lake, there is a ramp right there near the dam on the south side. Many, many people catch lunker smallmouth by drifting live shad under the tailwaters. There are multiple people fishing below the dam almost every day of the year, but its a big area.

If fishing a tailwater is not your thing, the main body of wilson lake is a great smally fishery by itself. It can be difficult at times, in summer nightfishing is the normally accepted way of maximizing your opportunity. Wilson is dominated by some massive rock bluffs on the main river and just a handful of creeks - otherwise its a small go between lake seperating wheeler and pickwick. THe main creeks are big nance, bluewater, town, 4 mile, 6 mile, shoal, and theres another on the south side whose name I forgot.

Accomodations: For putting in below the dam, you have 3 real choices. Fishermens Resort, which is located on Big Nance - its ratty, but it has style. 8) Its also the closest to the dam and I believe the most affordable. Double Head resort is not quite geared towards your average fisherman - its expensive - but nice. Like a country club on town creek. It even has a quail reserve. Joe Wheeler State Park (the cabins) is located on wheeler lake, but thats about a mile drive from the ramp. Obviously you arent on wilson lake, but its no real trouble getting there and the cabins are nice and not as expensive as double head. Don't forget that wheeler lake on the east side of the dam has a pretty good history, considering one of those sloughs on the north side was once home to the world record smallie.

If you have any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer more.

That's my home lake as well. If I can help in any way, just let me know.

I met tigr and his dad today and took them out on Wilson. They are in town for the Triton Owners tournament. It's always good to meet someone on here and to put a face with their name.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the information. I have fished there before but only for catfish and striper. I've grown to have an interest in bass fishing and I'm just beginning to learn a little about it. This web site is great for new comers to the sport.

Great to see you around, haven't heard or seen from you in awhile. I agree it's always nice to meet up with the folks from this site, and go fishing. 8)

Lizards,
The computer was sick for a while plus I've had so many things going on the last month or so that I've hardly had the chance to get on here to check things out.
