Teaching kids to use a baitcaster
I just thought of something. If you set a baitcaster up properly like Robbie R. and others here have told, do you think it would be easier to teach a child to use a baitcaster instead of a open faced spinning reel?
The baitcaster would be similar to a spincast (push button) reel. Just teach them to keep their thumb on the line. I don't know. Maybe I am making it sound easier than it likely would be. Maybe I am asking for trouble. But if they were to learn early on, imagine how good they would be when they are older. Next time I take my daughter out fishing I am going to give her the baitcaster and let her try it. I mean, the worst thing that is going to happen is she backlashes it and that is not hard to fix. |

I think it would work fine. I taught my 6 year old brother how and he can cast pretty well with the tension set high.

My kids are all proficient in the use of both, the youngest being four. The wife, however, need only look at my baitcasters and birdnests appear.

Just depends on how much she wants to learn it. There is no such thing as a baitcaster being too difficult for a kid to learn, its a matter of motivation.
My Dad learned first to cast a fly rod - at the age of 4. Fly fishing is way more difficult than baitcasters.

I'd say that you will be fine, just keep the tension and brakes up when they are first starting... and like WTL said it is all motivation.
