Welcome. Click the "Search" tab and type in smallmouth and you'll find plenty on lures, techniques, etc. You'll find it just above the "Softbait Glue" ad - to the right. Also scroll down in a couple of the "Categories" and see what's been posted lately. There has been plenty written on this exact subject lately. Fishing for smallies in streams seems to be a popular subject this summer. |

No better bait than a live hellgrammite. They're found under submerged rocks. Nastiest things you've ever seen and they bite, but they're guaranteed to land fish. (See below)
http://insects.tamu.edu/images/insec...t/bimg121.html Watermellon or pumpkin. senkos in 3", 4" and even 5" sizes do the trick as well. Some say 3" inches is best because that is the size of a helgrammite. Regardless of the bait, you need to get it goin on the conveyor belt of food. I put a small/med split shot about 6-12" above the hook and cast upstream at a 45 degree angle and let it drift down. The bait/lure should stay just above the river bottom. I move my rod tip up and down just a little bit to keep the shot from snagging. Let it drift till about 45 degrees downstream and then retrieve. A hookup will usually feel just like a snag unless it's a big one, then you're drag will be buzzin. "inch for inch and pound for pound the gamest fish that swims." So hang on and reel. |

Where are you fishing? Is it a lake or a river?
Botte, I remember catching Hellgramites when I was a kid to use fishing in the Tuscarawas River, nasty, nasty bugs. |

Delaware River, it separates NJ & PA. Yep, same one George Washington crossed to beat the British. I heard Field & Stream ranked it top 5 in the country for smallies.

A good tactic that I have found works on smallmouth is using a 3/16 Strike King Bitsy Bug with a 3 or 4" Paca Chunk trailer. When this combination is worked along the bottom, it looks like a large crawdad or a dying goby, two key parts of a smallmouth basses diet.
