oh fly farter
By LAWRENCE VAN GELDER
Published: March 28, 2006 Ernest Hemingway's 40-foot black-hulled fishing boat, the Pilar, will be getting the once-over from Dana Hewson, the vice president for watercraft preservation at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Hewson and members of the Hemingway Preservation Foundation have gone to Cuba, where he will examine and photograph the boat at La Finca Vigia, Hemingway's estate. In 2005,even though the Pilar was not in the United States, the National Trust for Historic Preservation placed it on its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Hemingway sailed the Pilar when he lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1960 and is said to have conceived some of his finest works, including "The Old Man and the Sea," while onboard. The Hemingway foundation is working with the Cuban government to preserve the Pilar as well as Finca Vigia and documents, photographs and books stored there amid concerns that the papers may eventually be damaged by warm, humid conditions. just so ya know.. i told rebby i have been on some very hard to find websites.. zooker

Thanks! I kinda thought I had it right the first time, but was willing to accept that another member had more current info. After all, I don't start every day by checking the GPS location of "Pilar" (which was also John Wayne's wife's name, BTW. Sad that they divorced several moons before he died. The Duke's boat was named...you guessed it...) Ahhhhh, trivia. What what would we do without it? FlyRoddius The First Emperor 'n All That Stuff |

Zook-he usually calls me an hour and a half or so before we are to meet-makes sure I'm awake and to give me a weather report. It is appreciated, believe me-he's my backup for the alarm clock !
