Skirtless Jigs
Today I got my first 100% confirmed strike on a jig. I didn't get a hookset on him, but I felt the tap, tap, pull of a fish with a lure in it's mouth. This got me all excited about jigs again, and when I got home I started playing with my jigs, and reorganizing them. I have one that I don't like so much, so I was gonna toss it out, but instead I pulled off the skirt and put a CL Chigger Craw on it.
Does anyone here ever use a jig with a trailer and no skirt?

I use Hula Grubs on football jigheads once in a while, and I know a lot of guys flip Brush hogs on flipping jigheads with no skirts too. Fish it and see what happens.

I fish plastics on a bare football head every now and then too. I've had the most success with craw type baits.
You can also buy replacement skirts if you want to change colors or don't like the skirt that came on the jig.

Yeah, I've done that a few times. I don't like the jig because it is a 1/2oz. I don't like that size, but I just thought I'd try it skirtless. You know, just to see what happens. I just wanted to see if other people have tried it.

Gotcha, I would definitely give it a shot with some type of large profile plastic before you give up on it.

I caught a few fish last year with a bare football head with either a Strike King Rodent or Yum Money Craw. Give it a try and see how it works for you.

it will work john, give it some time. try different plastics on it too. i will take a worm (manns jelly worm) that is torn, cut it to the tail, hook it on and use it like a shaky head sometimes. any torn worm will do though.

Hey John. One good way to use that jig head would be to thread about a 4" soft body swim bait onto the jighead. The half oz. size of the jig would work great with it. Just cast it out, reel it in slowly and hang on. It's a good early spring combo.

Hey john, i have done some of the same and decided to branch out my 'jig inventory' for flipping and pitching. One thing i havent heard much about that i'm going to give a shot is a Spider jig.... That bad boy on a 1/2 oz jig head would be a heck of a chunk to put out there but it sure would have a lot of weight to get you down where you needed to go.

I have grenerally hated skirted jigs, since I only found them with weed guards, that do nothing but pick up weeds. possibly the worse idea I have ever seen in fishing tackle
I have a nice collection of football and Arkie jigs, a friend made for me without those stupid fiber weed collectors, and i will try them this year This was a good thing however because i found my most consistent lure a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce plain Football or shakey Jig head ( gotta throw a few Sliders in) with a wire bait holder with either a beaver craw or Brush hog trailer, VERTICAL JIGGIN:My best baits all around Followed by C riggin |

That's what a jig worm is. Or what's now called a shakey head. I've been fishing worms, craws, and other plastics on different jig heads for years. Or are you asking if you can take the skirt off a jig n pig and fish it without the skirt? Sure can. Matter of fact the first jig n pig ever fished had no skirt. It was just a pork chunk on the end of a jig. |

This is basically the same jig, save that the head is olive green, as was the skirt. I might try other things on it as well, but I put a black/red flake crazy legs chigger craw on it to try out first.

GP/gold or Melon/gold and/or red flake trailer I think would match it a little better. Unless you want the trailer to not match the jig.

When it comes to fishing, just about anything is worth trying once.
Try this sometime...take a shaky head jig and put a 6" white shoelace on it...

Instead of an actual jig you should try using a spot remover pro model. It looks just like a real craw with its pinchers in the air.
