Why are jigs hawg busters?
So why exactly do more big bass eat pig-n-jig than any other lure?

i think it is such a good bait to fish for big bass because you can imatate most types of natural forage

Thats a good question bud and has sevral answers. Mainly it is a big lure that is dropped right on there noses so to speak. A bass even though its a predator still likes to expend as little energy and reap the most reward. A bigger meal without having to move. Plus the fact that a PNJ imitates a craw which for the most part is the highest on favorites for a bass to consume. Craws are high in protein and a bass just loves em. Hope this clears it up for ya.

Bigger profile, slow moving stealthy approach, the ability to mimic almost anything that swims or crawls.

I have a little theory about this and I believe it has something to do with jigs being fished near the bottom, and feel larger fish spend more time near the bottom therefore you have the bait in front of a "larger" audience.

I think some has to do with the bulk of the bait.

I read an article (maybe here or somewhere else) about a study that was done that said bass prefer bulkier foods over thinner foods. That could be one reason why bass like crawdads and fat jigs. Also, clearly crawdads are easier prey than another fish because of their more limited mobility.

I choose to use heavy jigs in cover that others won't go near, plus once the jig is under a prime spot, we tend to move it really slow, two factors along with others that have been mentioned that may explain lunker lips eatin preferences..I've seen days where only smaller fish will hit the jig tho too...

They are most often presented to the place a bass spends most of its time...On or near the bottom. You'll usually only find bass spread out in the water column during fall patterns when they chase baitfish, during spawn and on the off chance they are really active during feedin. A big bass though, will usually stay close to structure, its "territory", and the bottom...all places a jig is worked. THe bigger a fish gets, the less it moves and the more it will stay in one single area.
Another reason Jigs probably work so well is because they can lay motionless and then suddenly move..startling a bass into biting. Also, since most people fish during sunlight..and most people throw jigs into very heavy cover or mats or things like that...the likelihood of a big fish being under there during heavy sunlight is very high. Fish cannot stand to be in direct sunlight because its hard on their eyes, they are very sensitive. |

jnp
I live in michigan and have justed learned to fish jnp. I love this bait because on bedding bass it irritates the heck out of the bass. The rattle and the bulk always gets me the bigger ones. I shouldnt say always, Usually.

You guys pretty much covered the jig thing. In my estimation it is the size aspect of the bait. On occasion I'll use a 3/4 ounce jig with a jumbo pork frog from Uncle Josh, and there isn't anything like the "hammer" that this jig gets from the fish.

Your dad is correct. Big fish don't go chasin' blue light specials through the neighborhood. You have got to drop it on their heads . Its important to throw the jig in the heart of the worst peice of cover available. Worry about getting her out after you set the hook.I see alot of people will try to flip multiple spots around the heavy cover , must be hoping that the big fish took its dumb pill and come chasing. It don't most generally work that way.P N J

PNJ, that's why fish are shaped like wedges, so you can get them out of the thick stuff.
