Default Surprise!

So there I was, fishing one of the local river spots that I have found to be fairly good for smallies, it is dusk, close to dark, and I had had no luck at all with the bass. So just for giggles as I was getting ready to go home in defeat, I noticed a little jointed Rap I had forgotten I had, about 3 inches. "What the hell?" I think to mysself, and tie it up to pitch it once or twice on my ultralight. Second toss out and WHAM! something hit it and hit it with a vengeance dragging out line like crazy. Here I am thinking I must have hooked into the state record smallie or a trout. So after about 15 minutes of playing the fish, I got a glimpse of it and think what the hell? Did I hook up with a muskie? It was certainly no bass nor trout. Finally, I got it into the shore, and was able to see it, a nice little 3 lb. (according to my questionably calibrated scale) channel cat. So, no bass, but I did get dinner...

Then kitties will surprise you. I've caught them on crankbaits, plastic worms, jigs, and Yum Dingers. Somebody, I think Bassintom, caught one on a buzzbait!

As we can see from the use of a root to hold the thing, I didn't have a stringer as I was not fishing for dinner (and am terrified of the blasted things while they are alive, too many bits about them to make you go ouch!). I also noticed I neglected to mention that the stretch of river I was fishing is quite shallow which is what really surprised me. I know cats will hit artificials from time to time, but even finding a cat in this section of river is very unusual.

That Potomac is gr8 for cat's in bass tourneys, i hooked what i thought was going to be a state record bass on a 7" red shad power worm, (after he hit it for the third time) in 12' of water at the end of a laydown in the first 6 mile limit in Mattawoman, Damn thing turned out to be a 17lb cat, an of course i didnt have a net. so i went ahead an lipped it, I must say they do have a decent lip clamp. I did wind up pulling a 6-6 off the same tree tho about 10 casts later. and yes at first i thought i had another cat, but only for a minute lol...

and don't forget
