Default Winter Spooning

I took Cole last Sunday to Lake Orange at noon to try the fishing... was very chilly, the water temp was 44* or so.. we located some bait balls i 15' water and started casting to them with silver buddy type baits and flutter spoons. I was amazed that this crappie swiped his flutter spoon... he had a face full of it!

I managed to catch a 5.5 on a silver buddy...

All in all we had 2 bass, 2 crappie and a white perch.

Good looking bass. Looks like you had a pretty good day fishing for winter time. Spoons is something I haven't really tried much of, looks like I need to learn. Again nice bass.

Jigging spoons is something I should try more often. Nice pics!

Funny, I managed to catch a few crappie on a big fat free shad. One was around 15" and 1.5 lbs. They must be more active in the winter than bass.

Nice fish for what can hardly be called Winter, here at least. I don't fish spoons much, but am I correct in believing the way to fish a spoon in winter, is to let it fall to the bottom, then give it rips off the bottom, let it drop back down, then rip it again ect.?

Dogmatic, you are correct! Cast, let sink .. rip... someimes if youi see suspended fish schooled up you don't let it hit bottom... count down to approriate depth & rip... I've caught several suspended bass & crapiie doing it that way...

Hey Bamabassman.. It was cool to see Cole catch that Crappie on that flutter spoon!!! I could'nt believe it... last I had looked back he was fishing the silver buddy.. then he snuck that one in on me...

Dogmatic--- the amount of rip varies also.. we've been short ripping now.. but there are times where they want "stroked" or ripped high.

sam, i was out with the wife shopping today. went to this place called UNCLAIMED BAGGAGE. found a johnson's silver minnow spoon. $2.00.it's one of the bigger ones. red with a white stripe through it. gonna put a pork trailer on it come a few weeks from now. jig it on the highway support collums. see what it brings up. probably about 20-30 feet down. or may glide it across the pads. don't know which i will do first. but gonna use it. got a few spoons in my arsenal. i hope to use a lot of different stuff this year.

Not the topic I was expecting............. I love spooning, it doesn't have to be winter, but cooler weather does make it more enjoyable.......................

Maybe you can find someone else on the forum who also likes to spoon. I hear the internet is good for hookin' up. After all it's no fun spooning alone.
