My Son play paintball at a fairly high level. Almost every week is a tournament somewhere. Well I finally laid down the "Dad rule" I will still take him to his every Saturday events, but rather than us leaving the house at 7:30-8:00, we are going to start leaving at 5:00. I figure this puts us on some body of water for a couple of hours before his tourney.
I suspect that he won't even get out of the car tomorrow, but hopefully he will see me catching fish and get the bug.
He may end up resenting me for it, but at 15 he does not have many other transportation options.

i would bet that he doesn't end up resenting you in the end. i would lay odds that he will end up fishing right along side you eventually. great idea cass.

Well, he went and was not too happy about it. Like I suspected, he just sat in the car. Then I switched over to an ultralight rod and hooked up to a decent 2.5 lbs fish. I left the drag light so that my son could hear it running. I made him net it. (I almost never use the net)
After that he stayed out of the car and even made a few casts. No bites, but he was only half-@$$ fishing. On the drive to the paintball park, he said that going fishing this morning "didn't suck" I think that is teen code for "I had a good time".

Paintball is more expensive than bass fishing??? Thank God I don't do that too. Let's see=after about 15 reels and rods and countless baits. Let's don't forget hooks and line, etc. I know I'm in for over 4 or 5 grand. That includers my little 14 ft boat. Licenses, gas, food. Jeez it goes on and on. But I love it.

I can see the payback now.... The son is all grown up... cassidyta is an old man that can't drive because he can't see good and he don't react so quick anymore. His son says, "OK, I'll take you to the fishing hole. But... We're gonna leave early and you have to watch me play paintball for two hours first."

Man...I can't stress enough how much less trouble teenagers will get into if they just have something constructive to do...especially if it is with their old man.

That's why I got into trouble as a teenager lol. My stepdad was a jerk who hated us.

Yes, paintball can be more expensive than fishing. A boat is the only real exception to that. Paintall guns run between $150 up to $1500. (My son will never own a $1500 gun that is bought by me) Add a tank to the gun at close to $100, a decent mask for around 75 and the other misc gear like pants, team jerseys and so on. Then you add the paint for a day. Usually 2 cases at $35 per case and then the field entry of $25. It becomes about a $100 event for non tourney weekends. Tourney fees add an extra $100.
Fortunately my son is on a sponsored team so the paint and field entries are at a much lower rate.

This evening he asked if we could go and do some salt water fishing. Come to find out, it is legal to shoot the seals with paintballs if they are trying to get your catch.
