Topwater bass

Hey guys, I tried a topwater frog tonight and i did get some hits. The big bass seemed to just suck and kinda jump at it. And other bass would just jump out of the water at it but i couldnt get a good hook set. I tried to drop it then set the hook if one hit it but that didnt work either. Also i tried a texas rig with a couple different types of jerk bait but all that did was get nibbles. Does anyone have a good way of catching these bass?? Remember im in thick weeds just off the bank and the bass are sluggish. Thanks for your help
