Looks cool, but I'd base jump over that anyday! It sucks though because in Michigan you have to be 18 and take some gay courses.

Sweet pics though!

No thanks-I'll stick to scuba diving. An out of air emergency is a WHOLE lot more serious for a sky diver than a scuba diver

That's an interesting way of looking at it, Reb...I don't guess having a reserve tank would do any good to a skydiver, huh? Unless you pointed it towards the ground and knocked off the valve. Jet propulsion, baby!!!

That's an old scuba diver's joke, MB.

I've come up from 100 feet on one breath of air during training. It sounds impressive, but thanks to the laws of physics at 100 feet you have 1/3 the volume but 3 times the number of oxygen molecules in your lungs compared to being on the surface, so it really isn't that big of a deal.

If you only have 1/3 the volume of oxygen, but three times the amount, wouldn't that be equal on the surface and down there?

Nope. Say you have a balloon at sea level with X amount of air in it. As you descend, the balloon gets smaller. The air in the balloon gets compressed, but it still has the same amount of oxygen in it. The deeper you get, the smaller the balloon gets and the more concentrated the oxygen gets. The same thing happens to a scuba tank.

Say for example at sea level a breath of air is 1000 oxygen molecules. At 100 feet, the air is compressed and the oxygen is 3 times as concentrated, meaning in our example a breath is 3000 oxygen molecules. The more concentrated the oxygen, the longer you can "hold your breath".

I say "hold your breath" in quotations for a reason. Once again, physics comes into play. As you ascend, the pressure decreases and the air expands. Our balloon gets bigger again. But so does the air in your lungs, so if you hold your breath as you ascend you risk an embolism, a ruptured lung, or worse. So, as you come up you slowly exhale to reduce the pressure of the expanding air in your lungs.
