Default Are you ready for some.....

Yes, It's that time of the year again. High School Football officially starts next week but the new coach has already started a mini-camp and held a parent/player/coach meeting. My summer vacation ends and it's back to work. That's good because I was getting bored to death fishing every day and not having any responsibilities......

3D - you coach? teach? I teach and coach in a middle school and handle most of the scouting for the varsity (15 years and counting!). This year I'm also coaching my son's 4th and 5th grade team... very little fall fishing in the works for me!

Hah, summer vacation doesn't end until the day after Labor Day here. Then again, it doesn't start until June.

brush - I do the athletic training thing for all fall sports. Got volleyball, field hockey, cross country and football going now. I return a month early to cover practices and provide treatment, etc.
The only coaching I do is help the field goal kickers when I can. Got one who hit from 50 the other day but with no line or pressure.

3d, i have a nephew (14) who is 5'9", weighs around 190. and runs the 40 in 5.9. i have seen him run see...he takes real short, choppy steps as he runs. can't he get better time ifn he was to take longer strides? i think he can. he plays lineman, and linebacker. he is pretty good to have only played a couple of years. ifn you have some tips and such i can send him it would be very appreciated. thanks pal.

Bama, there is a ton of speed development information out there. A place to start is with flexibility, increased flexibility equals increased speed.

Stride length is important, speed is determined by stride length and turnover (how fast they pick 'em up and put them down.) So increasing stride length should help.

I could send you some simple speed development stuff we use with our middle school athletes. It doesn't require anything but some grass to run on and some effort.

Sprinting, with good form, on a gentle downhill slope (20 degrees or so) is a simple way to increase stride length. based on his size I would hazard a guess that knee lift may be an issue too..

Speed development is a huge industry now, I would bet some of your local coaches know someone reputable whose ear you could bend.

I coached Track and Field for 10 years and have coached Football for 16 years, so we are always looking for simple ways for kids to develop speed...

Speed camps are great, I've attended them, coached at them and even run a few small ones.
The only problem I have with camps is parents and kids think they will get faster, and stay faster, from one week of Speed Camp.

Speed camps, good ones ,give you the tools to go home and continue to get faster. Speed development is work... there are no quick fixes....

Going to agree with the Hog on this. Athletes need to be taught how to run and move properly in order to improve. Very few learn correctly by themselves. Some do but not many. Make a recomendation to your PE teachers that they work with the kids during gym class. A couple minutes once or twice a week will help. Doesn't take much to start good fundamentals. The tips can be part of the warm up. Very few coaches spend the time during practice either. What a shame. They really don't see the relationship between correct movement and performance. Oh well, I can't help them all.

My 14 year old got his first real "what the hell was that" hit today at freshman practice. He is a 5'9 160 lbs D-lineman. (exact position yet to be determined) and had no idea where the pulling guard was and only had his eyes on the HB. He did bounce right back up and completed the series. I know I shouldn't get motivated at seeing my kid get the snot knocked out of him, but I think he now understands the "head on a swivel" concept.
Next year is the middle son's time. 13 years old, 6'1" and 175.
It hurts now when they want to wrestle with me.....lol
