Default Trip to Philly

Went for a convention but thought I'd check out the sites and sample the food while I was there. Got to spend a little time exploring the city and found some good places to hang out. Ben Franklin museum was interesting but the Mummers were better. Turns out they know how to do New Years in Philly!!! Check out the Mummers if you don't know their history.

More on the market below.

The Reading Marketplace is really cool. Takes up a city block and has been around since 1860's. Many different foods to choose from. Found the butcher and took a couple shots of the grilling section......... oh my!

Also take a look at lunch......Man was that ever good. Sorry but I didn't get enough to share

I have never visited that city but it sounds like a good place to check out someday. I've never heard of the Mummers before. The main reason I want to go is to visit the Mutter Museum.

www.mummers.com

"Mummers tradition dates back to 400 BC and the Roman Festival of Saturnalias where Latin laborers marched in masks throughout the day of satire and gift exchange. This included Celtic variations of “trick-or-treat” and Druidic noise-making to drive away demons for the new year. Reports of rowdy groups “parading” on New Years day in Philadelphia date back before the revolution. Prizes were offered by merchants in the late 1800’s. January 1, 1901 was the first “official” parade offered about $1,725 in prize money from the city.

The Mummers parade is a celebration of the New Year but is serious business in Philadelphia. Clubs work on the costumes and practice all year for their one day in the sun (…wind, rain or snow). There are many lively discussions over the scoring by the judges and adherence to the complicated set of rules the marchers must follow when being judged. String Bands are judged on their musical presentation as well as the costumes. Seeing and hearing a String Band performing live in the parade is a one-of-a-kind experience. "

Bender - I'm worried about you!!!

Actually I did bring home some smoked kielbasa that was made by Menonites from Lancaster. Good stuff! Had to freeze some since I've made another trip up north to Cape Cod, MA for a week. I believe a Loahbsta dinnah is coming up real soon!
