Back on Mattawomen Creek for the summer double report
Nice cool weather and overcast skies should be a bonus for fishing. Except temps dropped 20 degrees. We found the fish but getting them to bite was another task. But first we always start with a sure thing...UHHHMMMYY Ribs and chicken..
Lots of half interested fish and few hook ups. I think the few fish left in the shallow warmer water just did not want to chase down a frog. We saw many that just ignored our baits. But the frogs did start singing right at dark. So I guess just a few hot days and it will be awesome. Capt Mike After some really good food we headed way back and found some agreeable pesky LGMouth in the shallow edges. The bandito... Great crew Capt Dave

We have a large bed of American lotus developing and taking over one side of the creek but all pads in the pictures are spatterdock. They are easier to fish than the lotus. Those lotus have these long roots that can be 6 feet long and very tough to get a lure thru.

Thought the leaves looked smaller than ours,we apparently have both, and in the fall when drawdown occurs I see some dollar lillies. Both the spatterdock and lotus grow above the water line, lily pads merely float.Alligator grass seems to be holding fish nowdays with the main lake not having much hydrilla.
Oddly Garret lake a small lake about 30 miles away does have lilly pads, huge ones about 24 in across havnt a clue what species, looks like belongs in fla. Nice outing |
