~~Split Ring Question??~~

Hello all, Just wondering... do you guys that replace treble hooks take the split ring off the lure or do you keep it on the lure while changing it? My Rapala treble hook is bent and fragile, time for replacing. DAVE

I change mine if they are the originals on the bait and are cheap, or, if they are rusted or don't look to good any more.

Big, I don't think thats what he's asking.

DL, I do this often, and I leave the split ring on. Just split the ring slightly to where the old hook eye is in the groove, and slide the new one on. This will save some time. Make sense?

if you don't have splitring pliers get some............they make this a lot easier.

joolyen is spot on. To remove the split is adding extra work to an otherwise simple task.

The only exception I can see is if the split ring itself is compromised. Then I would replace it.

I also agree that split ring pliers make this an even easier task.

i use a metal pick .. like to clean crevices and stuff.. it works great.. until you slide it off the ring

Thanks a lot fellas. I KNOW split rings come in different sizes but do the split ring pliers come in different sizes, also? The only split ring pliers for purchase at WAL-MART are wayyy to big for my little rings.

Walmart may only have one size, but go to some other outdoor store. They'll have smaller ones.

Great question. Yes, not all spilt ring pliers can open the smaller ones.

www.jannsnetcraft.com I've got the red handled ones. They work great for me on size 2 split ring, and you probably shouldn't go any smaller than that for bass fishing. I'll look to get you a full link to pliers.

You can also buy needlenose pliers and modify them slightly. It was either adding a peice of a nail on one side, or just bending one part down slightly. Sounds a bit confusing, but I'll try to see if i can find a pic
