I am not an expert, but I have made some. Although anyone can make them it will really be helpful if you have a fair understanding (in other words, let's hope you were awake in class during physics, lol) of physics.
I would suggest you visit the tackleunderground. It is the place to learn from the best. The biggest challenge is getting your bait to balance in the water and knowing where to put the weight. The amount of weight and its location in the crankbait body are crucial. It's not impossible to learn and I did start from ground zero (no knowledge). Give it a go. If you think catching fish is cool, the feeling is 1000 times better when you catch it on something you made with your own hands. This is a link of my journey in making my first one. I made it from balsa. First Crankbait http://washingtonfishing.ning.com/pr...ource=activity Attempt at a Minnow http://washingtonfishing.ning.com/pr...ource=activity Good luck and keep us posted.

I don't build them, but I do my own paint jobs. I strongly suggest you go to
www.Tackleunderground.com you won't find a better resource for lure making of all types as well as custom painting you baits. There are a lot of different woods guys use and they can give you the in's and outs on the difference in wood selection, as well as what tools you'll need to get started. It covers everything from beginning basics to extreme expertise.
