If there is water in the gear case you will need to rinse it off-GENTLY . Let it air dry and you are good to go.

Don't feel dumb about the screw inside the case-it took me a while to figure that one out, too .

One other thing: Your line. After using it in Salt Water I'd either change it completely, or unspool it and reel it back in through a damp sponge or cloth soaked in real magic, KVD line and lure or some sort of line dressing to get the salt off of it.

Thanks Lizard and Reb. Gear case? Is that just the sideplate with the handle?

So after I use it in saltwater and I switch back to freshwater after a week I should change lines? Or after every day of saltwater fishing?

I feel like I'm being overly protective of the reel.

Thanks-

Either change or at least clean the line. I'm paranoid about reels and saltwater, though. Rinsing it off should be enough .

Yes-the gearcase is the side plate with the handle. That's where the gears are
