Bass fishing in thick grass
I hope someone could help me with a problem I have fishing my local lake. The lake is relatively shallow ( 3 - 6 ft.), and filled with stumps and heavy grass cover. I spend most of the time pulling grass off my line. I generally use rubber worms bouncing off the bottom , and white spinnerbaits. I would think this would be a pretty good spot, but have had minimal results. Any suggestions for fishing this type of water ( lure, live bait, presentation, etc.). Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum!
Try fishing your worms weightless. They will still be effective but won't dig into the weeds like it does with a sinker on it.

Weightless plastic presentation is an excellent suggestion...There are many different types of this type bait on the market that can be used in this fashion...Also several different types of weedless plastic frogs that would also work here...Another presentation I would try is flippin a 1/2 oz jig into and around open pockets in the grass, especially around the stumps....Blue/Black is a good color to start with..Thanks lakeguide

using a worm weightless...? so you're not really getting any distance, you're basically just dropping it over the side of the boat and letting it fall slowly . Is that about right?

With a weightless worm, on a spinning reel, you can get great distance. I know alot of people who have grown up with a baitcasting reel would rather cast that jig out there instead of switching to a spinning reel with lighter line. I too would suggest a worm or soft plastic jerkbait (like the Slug-Go or Super Fluke) rigged weedless and weightless. Try those on spinning tackle, and you'll be glad you did.

Try a Tiki Stick made by Wave Worms. It is a Senko-type bait:
That is heavy enough to throw a long way on a baitcaster and just flat catches fish. WalMart usually caries a good selection. Rig it just like a T-rig but no weight and work it with gentle twitches of the rod tip.

I acheive very good distance with unweighted plastics, even w/ a baitcaster. I prefer spinning rods for my unweighted plastics though. Besides w/ most applications- I said most not all. You dont really want to throw a bait 50 yards out. The chance of losing a fish on the hookset increases due to the distance. For the most part, my fishing is done 10, maybe 15 yards from my target area. This way the length of my rod is still a leverage factor in a good hookset.

Worms
Well i just came back from a lake like that today and i was using white worms using a 1/4 OZ. Jig Head. What you should try is not letting the worm sink but start slowly reeling it in with some sort of pattern and i really saw a differnence with the amount of weed and grass that cot stuck on my jig head ya there was a little every once and a while but i caught a 1.3 poung bass and a 2.14 pound bass and was really getting alot of bites.

I use a 3/0 or larger offset shank worm hook-that or an extra wide gap (EWG) hook will work fine.
