The rick clunn, or a Bionic blade or extreme rod frOm bps are in your price range, all of them are decent rods for the money, as above I would go with either a 6'6" or 7' M/H for an all purpose rod.

All Star!!
Bought an ALLSTAR at dicks sporting goods 3 weeks ago. 69 dollars and awesome!!.. Fuji guides nice reel seat, cork handle. SWEET! Still have some left, if you want one let me know, I'll pick it up and mail it to you. I have seen the same rod at other places for 120 bucks. Some sale I would say.

As you can see, you get a lot of different answers. Since you are in Houston, head over to Academy and check out the Allstars. The Classics may not be the rod they were a few years ago, but they are running about $40-50 and if you bust one you can take it back and get it replaced free. That is tough to beat. I'd go with a WR1: 6-6 MH and a good all-around rod. If you want to get aplication specific, they have an AllStar Classic spinnerbait rod I absolutely love.
Regarding the BPS rods, they are good rods but I hate the hump handle they have so I don't use them. If they didn't have that handle I'd definitely use them.

I have a buddy who bought some nice slightly used LOOMIS Rods off ebay a couple of years ago.....for half of what they cost new. Almost every one of his baitcasters were "broke" ones from ebay that he rebuilt himself.
