Removing Backlash.
Heres a little trick i learned about how to remove backlash.....this will come in real handy for those of you who fish at night.
(1) Once you realize you have backlash stop and cool off.....dont make it worse by picking and pulling. (2) Place your thumb onto the loose coils of line and work it from side to side on the spool. (3) Turn the reel handle forward half a turn and repeat step # 2. (4) Repeat step #2 and # 3 up to five or six times. (5) This helps to straighten out and redistribute the inter-laping coils of loose line so they dont hang up. (6) Tighten your drag control knob to reduce the amount of free spool. (7) Hold the line lightly between your thumb and forefinger and strip the line in a manner that if too much resistance is encountered the line will slide out from between your fingers. This isnt a magical cure all.....but you will be amazed at how well it works. |

I usually get most of mine out by pushing the spool release and putting good pressure on the spool with one thumb while just pulling the line off with the other hand, of course these are not major backlashes, Uusally I am quick enough to put a halt to them before they get to bad

Widowmaker,
I do something very similar to that and I learned it a while back. I was told that Bill Dance showed it on one of his shows. The instructions seem really strange but the method seems to work more often than not. It's worked just about every time I needed to use it, but I don't backlash anymore. (yeah, right! ) You might note how similar the steps are to yours. 1. Do not attempt to pick out backlash 2. Tighten drag to the max 3. Place thumb on spool firmly 4. Crank hard a few times 5. Disengage spool and pull line out 6. Repeat if needed.

me too buddy! This technique has worked for me with mono, braid and even flouro. And like you, I have finally reached the point of rarely ever getting a backlash and at the worst only and overrun of just a couple of loops, even when dealing with strong winds.

One problem is when you get a backlash while using flouro. your line will get "kinked" . When your line kinks with flouo. it creates a weak spot. With this technique that you described, the chances of a kink are reduced.
