Trolling motor recommendation
I have a 18' Tracker Bass boat 1800TF with a 150 hp outboard and all the necessary (and some unnecessary) fishing equipment.
Currently have a 41lb thrust trolling motor on, and while it is normally sufficient, there are days when it is windy and the river is letting out that even on 24v setting, it's all that it can do to pull me back up current. What recommendations can you all make to something that you have that you really like on a similar type setup. Thanks. FWIW, it must have a foot pedal... and I'm a gadget junky... the more gadgets, the better. |

Well, back in the day, I had a 36 lb thrust Minn Kota. After I sold the boat, I promised myself that if and when I do it again, I will get a much more powerful trolling motor. Well, this year, I got a new boat and upgraded to a Minn Kota 101 Maxxum Pro. I tell ya', if you get one of these 3 battery motors, you won't be dissappointed. In fact, it kinda has a kick to it when you fire it up.

Just get the biggest trolling motor that the boat can handle. I would say a 71 lb thrust with 24 volts. (Motor guide) I have fished in 40 kt wind and still moved against the current, granted thats what 5 foreword speeds are good for.

I just go through last fall helping a friend do a resotre on the very same boat and motor combo. Those are very heavy rigs and need some thrust to move them efficiently. We settled on a 80lb Motor Guide but not before trying 2 smaller ones. They where a 65 and a 72lb thrust and the 80 has enough power to move the boat efficiently.

Bama, this weekend Bo said a friend or relative of his was getting him a different prop for his trolling motor. He's gonna sharpen the edges so they'll cut through the pads and stems better. Might want to ask Bo about it before you go and spend $$$ on a new motor.

Has anyone found that Motorguide props do not get thru the weeds as well as Minn Kota. My (old) Motorguide tangles up in weeds CONSTANTLY.

Get you a hydrilla hacker blade. Same thing as the Kipewa prop for a Motorguide.
