Lilly Pads In the Classic
They kept saying in day two of the classic that those dead lilly pad stalks were a hard bottom area. Is that true with every lake ? Do the lilly pads themselves make that bottom hard ( Roots ) ? And I guess the bass will spawn in that hard bottom area ?

Bass prefer harder sandy bottoms to spawn, not mud, lilly pads will grow in many different bottom types. The pattern might of been targeting lilly pad stalks that were in harder bottom areas would be my guess.

I found that to be interesting also, most of the pad fields I've fished over the years were growing in a mucky concoction of dead lily pads and stems from years past. I guess if you clear enough of that muck away you would eventually reach a sandy bottom?

Water Lillies do grow on firmer bottoms or substrate. When I run turtle traps in the marsh I trap in, I always walk on water lilly edges because it is alway a firmer bottom. Its not necissarly rock or gravel, but a sand clay mixture. I don't think plants can root real well if its a pure clay substrate, especially the blue clay. So its probably always a mixture of soil.
Bass perfer to spawn on harder bottoms than just muck or mud, I think most fish do. If a fish spawned on a muddy bottom, the soil could cover the eggs and deprive them of oxygen. Male channel catfish, flat head and blues always fan the eggs in rivers to keep debris and soil off of their eggs. Good fishin |

Bass will spawn in lilly fealds but they need some other type of structure around like rocks, wood, ect. Buy the way yes the bottom is harder just below the top three or four inches. The top will feal mushy but just below that it will be harder.

They will, but will do anything within their bassly power to prevent it (just what I've read).
