Best Weather for a Melting Lake
I've been looking online and can't find anything on this subject.
Is 60ºF with wind and rain better than a calm 65ºF day? Thanks |

ill take wind beating the bank anyday. especially some rip rap. makes it tough holding the boat in there, but itll blow the baitfish right in and the bass come running. if your lucky. sometimes im not. spinnerbaits..........

Alright. Lakes around here are still frozen, but with the great weather that is forecasted, the lakes should be good in about a week. The ponds are finally thawed however.

jools,
ya get a real windy warm day and that ice breaks up pretty fast, keep an eye on it and ya may get to go out earlier than expected...my pond behind the house was free for a week or two and last night skimmed over, but will probably be open this weekend. |

Cool. I'll post some stuff about my first SUCCESSFUL trip. Meaning I caught bass.
My goal is to catch a bass before March 21st. I think that's the earliest in the year I've caught a bass...even though I've only had one chance to catch one earlier than that. |

Jools, your ponds and lakes will thatw much faster with wind and rain, the more the better. Once the rain melts the ice enough, the wind will finish it off.

The wind is a real killer to the ice. I have been working on the boat myself and may try to get it out for walleye tomorrow. Stupid bass season in Michigan doesn't open for 45 days.

Bender, you could always go "finesse pike fishing" :P
We don't have a bass season down here... but we can't catch anything... Atleast the ice is gone and it gives me hope. BB

Jools, I'll take the first option any day of the week. I've always had better success on windy days with rain rather than calm days this time of the year. My personal opinion is that the rain will help warm the shallow water faster and draw baitfish in shallower. And the wind will make the bass less spooky with some chop on the water. You can work closer to the target areas when it's windy. Of course a week of heavy rain is a different story. But for your average rainy spring days, I'd take wind and rain over clear and calm conditions. Also, be sure to head for the north banks on the lake first. Yes, there are still plenty of bass in the southern portions of the lake. However, the warmer water will be pushed into the northern portions of the lake by the warm southern winds. Thats why the northern portions of the lake always thaw out first! Last weekend, all the lakes around my area were open water on the north shore, while ice still gripped the southern shores. What that means to you is the water on the north side of the lake, being warmer, will allow the bass on the north side of the lake to be more active. Bass being cold blooded animals will become more slugish the colder the water temps. Also, the baitfish the bass feed on will also become more active in warmer water. So stick with the north portions of the lake right after ice out.
