Default anti reverse query

http://www.landbigfish.com/Lews/Lews...tcast-Reel.cfm
This Lew's reel has two different anti reverse options. Does anyone know which one is which, I mean .........well I'm not sure what I mean
Which one has play in the handle? and why would that be wanted?

(BB1HZ, BB1SHZ, BB1HZL, BB1SHZL) have no anti-reverse. The reason for this is certain crankbait fishermen (Fritz) believe that this allows you to feel what your crankbait is doing a little better than reels with anti-reverse. The theory is that without anti reverse the pressure caused by dragging the crank through the water is then transfered to the handle of the reel, with anti-reverse you never feel this because the anti-reverse bearing absorbs this pressure.

I was a popular thing many years ago.

That's good information Tony, I never knew the reason behind them not having anti-reverse.

I wondered about this too. I know confidence is a huge key in fishing but how much sensitivity could this really add, especially when using a glass or composite rod? (which Frittz does) The original Lew's reels that had this were ahead of their time but that was 30 years ago. It seems kind of gimmicky to me. I've never handled a cranking reel with no anti reverse bearing though.

Joe, I have some old Shimano reels that had a selectable anti-reverse setting. When it was turned off that is exactly what you got. When it was on it was not like todays reels with an anti-reverse bearing, it used a system similar to the anti-reverse pawl in today's Shimano reels, it was just selectable.

When you turn the anti-reverse off, you can feel what a moving bait is doing in a little different way than you are used to. It is not vibration that you are feeling, but rather pressure/resistance. As you crank the bait in, resistance is felt in the handle because the bait being pulled through the water is trying to turn the handle in reverse. When the bait moves around or hits something, it changes the amount of pressure you feel in the handle, it is very unique and you will not experience it with todays reels with anti-reverse bearings.

I can let you borrow the old Shimano if you want to check it out. It will still get the job done.

You might do a little research on Fritz, I believe he is the one who made it famous.

Thanks for explaining it to me Tony. It makes a lot more sense now. Like you said, it isn't sensitivity in terms of vibrations being transmitted, it's actually direct contact with whatever is on the end of your line. I can see how that would translate to slightly more control and slightly better perception of what your crankbait is doing, regardless of what kind of rod you're fishing with. Very interesting

Just for the record, I never found it added that much to my fishing, and I was always afraid I would set the hook with anti-reverse off, and not get the spool held down.
