Default Pro/Cons of split handle rods

I have noticed a lot of the new model rods are going to the split handles. I mean I want my stuff light, but is it really necessary? I am used to the cork going all the way to the end and not sure if I want to invest in the new handle styles. What are some of your pros/cons with the split handles vs. the solid handles?

IMHO opinion, the weight savings is measurable but insignificant. For me, it seems to be something more along the lines of being aesthetic. I like the looks of both full and split grip rods.

If built right, they could offer more sensitivity if when held the split grip allows your palm to rest on the blank. Not all rods with a split grip allow the palm to rest on the blank. Most I've seen do not. If the palm doesn't rest on the handle, I cannot see how it could be any more sensitive than the same rod with a full grip unless the insignificant weight savings does increase sensitivity.

The Pros:
They look great

The Cons:
They look like junk
Perhaps that insignificant weight loss at the rear could increase the potential to make a rod more tip heavy and the rod's length increases?

The pros and cons are defintiely subjective!

It is very subjective.

I like the ergonomic feel of split grips a little more. Dats about it.

They do feel a little lighter I guess, but that could be my mind working. I have taken paint off rods before and "thought" they felt lighter.

i agree with it being subjective.

I like having the option of the extra sensitivity......even if i never put my hand on the exposed graphite....my split grip rod handle extends longer than my others, and i feel that i cast more accurately with it because of the way it slaps my forearm when i roll cast.....but going along with what WTL said,it could be my mind working

however, they are tasty looking.......and when you feel confident....you catch more fish.....at least so i read.

Well first off, I do prefer split grip rods! I personally feel confidant in them!

The Pros:
They are more sensitive, look cool, lighter and are comfortable. The one I have is a 6'6" cabelas XML rod, it came with a balancer (weights not included) and I never needed to even use it! I don't know about other split grip rods, but this one, is one great, well balanced stick!

The cons:
Some times they can be tip heavy, and to some, they can feel weird to cast!

That's all the pros and cons I think of at the moment, but I'm sure other will post something and the light will turn on!

Good luck bubba!

While they say they reduce weight and increase sensitivity, I highly doubt it improves either enough to actually make a difference.

I think it's more for looks honestly. And personally, I love the look of some of the split grips. I also think some are more ergonomic, but it may take a while to get used to casting with one.

I doubt I'll ever convert to the split grip. Just doesn't seem like it would benefit me any

I didn't switch for any reason other than the fact that the rod that I wanted had that feature. I feel that the weight difference is pretty much a push. I do believe that you can feel things a little better when you put your palm directly on the blank, but most of the time, my hand is closer to the reel than the blank anyways.

I've figured that'd be the case with me from the 1st time I saw one

I have to agree. Maybe it's because I'm a bit old fashioned and been using solid cork handles for 40 years, but I really can't see that big a difference. I've handled them and really I prefer the solid cork feel. I wouldn't hold the rod by the blank anyways. My rods like most have an exposed blank for your fore finger to rest on. Good enough for me. I just can't justify investing in a bunch of new rods that I feel are really unnecessary. I think it's more of a gimic to generate more revenue for the tackle makers.

Pros:
1: lighter behind reel (less material)
2: sensitive due to exposed blank
3: looks cool

Cons:
1. increases rod tip load
2. Exposed blank is cold to touch (cold weather)
3. Can not place in a rod holder and can not use in salt water.
4. Can not use as load lever on big fish.
5. cost more for less material.
6. very specific in usage..

I played with really nice one this weekend. It has a place in your arsenal...

I was just wondering, but thanks for the input. I wanted a carrot stick, but y'all have sort of persuaded me to vear from that. For some reason I had my heart set on the Lamiglas cranking rod ole Skeet was using in the classic. But I noticed they are back ordered everywhere, and he has switched rod builders, so they might be one of the past. I really haven't picked up any new rods in over 10 years now other than 2 I can remember. My old American made Castaways, not the new ones in Academy's, haven't let me down yet, but I know there is a time and place for everything. And I am just waiting for them to snap at the hilt. And looking for a reason to add to the arsenal.

I thought I would bring this back up. St Croix is now selling split handle rods called MOJO rods..

I think they stole a members name for their new rod series.

I just bought one and i did buy it more for the form of the function But in the description it sad (its light simply because their is less) and as I looked at the handle and saw to addition metal rings capping off the now to additional ends of cork I chuckled

When I am looking to get my next rod, if it is available with a split handle, I'll prolly get it just because, but it is nothing I'd go out of my way for...

Yea tell me about it! I did buy one though nice rods... Back to the subject I now have 3 spilt grip rods and 3 full cork. I fish all my plastics on spilt grip rods, I feel there more sensitive.

Also I just bought a Shimnao Crucial drop shot rod (spilt grip) and love it not only does my palm touch the blank but above the reel they made a little nitch in the cork so I can feel the blank with my index finger. That may be for casting but Im not sure cause this is my first spinning set up in like 3 years
