Here's the rest of the article http://www.gamefishin.com/wa/features/linetest.htm

Notice that p-line CXX 10lb breaks at a whopping 21lbs Also notice almost non of the 8 and 10lb test line breaks at 8 or 10lb test! Something is definitely wrong with that...

Sammy, there's nothing wrong with that. As has been theorized before, the lb rating is probably not intended to denote ultimate breaking strength, but inelastic yield threshold.

So basically, what you're saying in your engineer sorta way. Is that 10lb line stretched out breaks after 10lbs of force is applied?!

If yer saying that then I'm lost, lol!

Yeah, if you stretch it till it won't stretch any more , it should take 10 lbs to break it from there. Gotta love that p-line. I pull down trees with 8 lb. Lol

What I'm saying, Sammy is a 10 lb line will stretch when you hit it with 10 lbs. And when you let go, it will snap back to its original length, and be none the worse for wear. This is elastic behavior

At 12 lbs, it might not snap back to its original length. This is inelastic behavior. It may only do this a few times before it breaks at 12 lbs, or even less than 10 lbs.

At 14 lbs, it may break outright, regardless of its condition.

That's my point.

Bryce, your point only stands for nylon monos that exhibit elasticity. Fluorocarbon lines aren't elastic. They tend to stretch and stay stretched.

But only in their inelastic region. You're missing my point, or I'm not explaining it well enough.

Just because the fluorocarbon isn't stretching much within its elastic region doesn't mean it doesn't have one. It just has a very high stress/strain ratio; i.e, it isn't very stretchy. It still has an elastic region over the range of force listed above; i.e, from 10-14 lbs in the made-up example above.

That is why when a tensile strength test is done (for something that can be stretched...not things like concrete), you always record the sample deformation (strain) and loading rate. The test above didn't talk about how long the line samples were when they finally broke. I bet that would be interesting.

If this is accurate, it looks like Seaguar would be the worst choice, however I love their fluoro line and have had less break offs since switching...I used 8 lb floro leader for catching 20+ lb salmon on a fly rod and could not believe how well it worked compared to other leaders..the most noticeable difference was how it held up against abrasion from the rocks when the fish decided to run into the shallows...I do like P-line, but not as well as Seaguar...just sayin'

That is from a local (for me) fishing site. Nice to see this information making out to the rest of the country.
