Picture from this afternoon...
Got out the past two days. Grand total of 6 Mayans, 3 peacocks, 8 Largemouth, uncoutned Bluegil, 1 Sunfish. Everything was released except for the Mayans (best tasting fish hands down).
Bait: Green/black Road Runners, vertical jigging spoons, and thread fin shad. I was on my kayak, my friend was in his canoe. Tried to take pics but was a little hard due to fishing with live bait. Heres the only shot I took, it was caught on a shad and released shortly after:

They are pretty stable as you have a lower center of gravity vs. when your sitting in a canoe. Id try and find a place that demo's them and see if you like it. If you find that you like it, dont skimp on the seat. A bad seat will leave you with lots of back pain.

Oh, my bad, the name of the canoe is a "gheenoe"....not the fish (just mentioned it because you said you liked the rigging). Sorry for the confusion.

Looks like an Oscar only with different markings. It has the same shape head, fins and tail. I would bet a kid with a Zebco and an inline spinner or beetle-spin would have a ball with those!

I was using 6 lbs test. If I had to estimate it a 1 pound Mayan fights about the same as a 2 pound bass. They dig their head in and head straight for the bottom. Of the six I caught none of them jumped. Fun little fish.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Still sad that they are invasive tough.

This past saturday we counted 14 peacocks under the dock. Mind you were not helping by dumping shell rock and strategically placing slabs of granite under it (they like to breed in rocky/flat areas). Most of them were in the two to four pound range. The fish in my avatar was one of them, it was about 4 lbs. It had just got done chasing off a gar when I took the pic. Heres the fun part. Mayan's as well as Blue Tilapia serve no real purpose in our waters. There are no laws to my knowledge protecting them. Both fish are very sedentary....which makes them easy targets for spear fishing, or a bow. And Im pretty sure thats my next venture. The plus is that the meat on both fish is perfect. Tilapia actually sells at the local markets for over $5 a pound.
