Default 12 volt trolling motor question

How do you wire a 12 volt trolling motor to two battries?
The trolling motor has 1 red 1 orange and two black wires.

I may be wrong but i think the electric motor of a 12 v trolling motor is capable of handling only that one battery. Im not sure though i just bought my first trolling motor a couple days ago.

JOE,
Are you sure your TM is 12 volt only, and not 12/24? I have never seen a 12 volt only with 2 red and 2 black wires. Is there a toggle switch on the bottom of the TM head to switch from 12 to 24? What brand and model is the TM. Do you not have any paperwork that came with the TM?

Welcome to the forum, Joe!

Supposedly you can do it by using a couple jumpers to connect the + and - terminals on each battery. I say supposedly because every time I tried it before I moved up to a 24V the fuse always blew and when I switched to a circuit breaker it always tripped it.

Im not sure the difference between running it at 12v and running it at 24v with two batteries? Does it last longer running it off two batteries at 24 or on 12v then just switching batteries when the other goes dead? Reason I ask is me and my brother are buying a Jon Boat to fish some strip Pits and I have two batteries and a 12/24 trolling motor. Which setup would I be able to run the trolling motor longer?

You have a 12-24v Trolling Motor. The red wire goes to the positive of one batt with one black wire to the neg. The orange wire goes to the positive of another batt while the other black wire goes to it's neg.

On my 12-24v motor it runs faster in the highest setting when using 2 batteries but still works with just one.

Just run your batteries positive to positive, negative to negative. It will remain 12 volts,no matter how many batteries you have added to it, it will just increase your reserve power.I run 3 batteries for my 12 volt trolling motor for when the damned wind haskicked up a notch. P N J
