Lily Pads
What do you guys reccommend when fishing from the bank into lily pads on a small pond. I catch most of my bass real close to the bank under trees and fallen branches. There are rocks in some places, mud bottom in others along with weeds. The water clarity is stained. I catch most of my bass on a soft-plastic craw.

I meant a small lake, more of a pond. Not small pond.

never hit anything on a weightless unless i saw the fish move.. when i was fishing yesterday morning i was trying just a weighted but fishing it across the top fast enough to move it w/o sinking and i looked back down to see where my paddle was and while i was reeling it sounded like a crow smashed into the water the hit was so hard.. i was reeling too fast because i was planning on moving but that proves that it does work.. that was at about 7:30 AM

I have great luck with a weedless spoon called the Jawbreaker. It comes with a skirt already installed on the spoon. I've caught a ton of bass on that bait in the pads, as long as the pads are laying flat. I also do well with spinnerbaits in the pads. I just caught a nice bass the other day from shore by casting a spinnerbait out over and past the pads into open water and reeling the spinner back towards the pads from open water. It got about 3 feet from the pads and he nailed it. Another lure I use is a 1/2 oz. jig n pig combo. Use short pitches and work it back right through the pads slowly. Your going to need stout equipmrnt for this type of fishing. I use a 7 foot medium heavy rod and casting reel loaded with 40 pound braid line.

Floating worm, Senko type, Swimbait, spinnerbait (see dawg above), and try swimming those frogs instead of as topwater. Just a few ideas.

Any weedless topwater, or a non-weedless if you can get away with it. A wide variety of soft plastics fished in various ways. They can be twitched or swum, and it's usually a good idea to let them sink into holes or at the edges. Or, as mentioned above, weedless spoons, although I don't use them anymore.

I throw a a weightless finesse roboworm. I usually go with natural (oxblood) or the pink (morning dawn). When I work pads, I prefer to go with a conflict color. If the pads are on my side of the small lake, I will skip the worm across the pads with the goal of having it hit the water within the first foot of the pad. If the pads are opposite of me and I can reach them( preferred) I will cast onto the pads and twitch the worm back towards the water. I attempt to make the worm slide into the water slowly. If you are close enough, make the head vibrate the water before it falls completely. In the heat of the day, I have been able to get into the big boys (10 lbs+) by switching to a 10 or 12 inch snake and using the same technique. Out here we only have rattlers, so I go with a dark snake. I will thread the line through a small rubber or pork frog to give the appearance that the snake is chasing it. I know that it sounds like a lot of setup, but it has generated seom great results for me out of pads or fallen tullies.

Trick worm...rigged with just a hook. Zoom has some good ones in white, yellow, and some other colors, too. I like white or yellow to be different in areas where the pressure is on.
It will work through the pads and doesn't look like the frog that everyone is throwing. Can be fished on top or down a few feet. Hang on! Buddy |

seems every one thought of the normal baits to use. lets try one a bit out of the box... a buzzbait worked over the pads..

A Barracuda spoon with a (non-reversed skirt) is tough to beat in grass and works in pads, too.

I second that quote. Along the same note even the spro (or most hollow bodied) frogs can be worked underwater. Give them a squeeze under the water and allow them to fill up, you now have a slow sinking frog for a few casts. can be deadly if they wont hit the surface, or if you just missed the fish on the surface, reel in real quick, fill er with water, and throw it back out. The bass usually makes a 2nd pass for "stunned" prey.
