What do I need to fish smallmouths on the French Broad
What would be the best all around lure/bait/jig/ whatever to fish smallmouths on the French Broad River in NC.
What size hook & rig would I use for them also. Thanks goat |

I once caught a French Broad who had a small mouth. Perfect!
As I recall, for bait I used dinner at a fancy restaurant, with a movie "trailer". (Hey! It's YOUR fault for posting a suggestive title) Lancer6 Raconteur |

River fishing for smallmouth I always start out with a white senko texas rigged on maybe a 2 ot wide gap hook. Fish like a soft jerkabait and if that doesnt work, slow down. But normally, for me, it works.

When I go for smallmouth the fluke is my first choice (either in pearl white, glimmer blue,or watermelon seed for darker water) I have been told a 1/8 oz jig head with a 3/0 hook rigged weedless with a Zoom finnese worm is also a great weapon for smallies. This is what works in my area, maybe it willl work for you.

a small poper a green craw shallow shad rap as for a worm weightless 3" senko white/pepper i would go with a weightless paca craw also.both rigged on a 3/0 ewg hook... i have fish the lower french broad from asheville south to the sc/ga line..the upper french broad is a great wadin river... watch out for the musky that are also in that river.some are VERY big by any standards. zooker

The French Broad comes from just below Ashville through the gap into Tennessee and then is joined by the Pigeon and Nolachucky . That makes Douglas resevoir in tenneessee. below Douglas it joins the Holston which runs out of VA to make the Tennessee River just out of Knoxville. The French Broad below Doughlas has vertually no pressure because it is not very acessable and is very shallow in many places. It takes a jet drive to navigate. My nephew has a jet tracker and he fishes iot almost exclusively. They catch huge bass both LM and SM.

i heard that Zook. Every once in a while someone on this side of the Mountain will catch a big Musky from the river or upper portion of Douglas lake. They seem to think those are fish that have migrated from NC. I understand NC has a stocking program in the river over there. Fish2win
