Horny Toads ( Do you rig them eyes up or down)
I always rigged my frogs eyes up due to the fact that some frogs have light bellys and darker backs.
Hank Parker rigs them eyes down which makes sense since the fish would not see the frog's eyes if they were facing the sky. What is the proper way? |

I don't use Horny Toads, rather, I use another brand. But I've monkeyed around with the Hornies somewhat. I don't think the eyes or color makes much of a difference. But I've found (I think) based on just minimal use that rigging them with the hook slot riding up will cause the bait to roll over much less. And that is important to me, even though I know it's not a big deal to everyone.

If the toad is two tone, say for example, a dark top and a white bottom.....
On a bright day, you may want the light side down to appear more frog-like....but on a dark or overcast day, I'd rig the dark side down in hopes the sillouette of the frog from underneath would contrast better with the gray sky. We used to do this with the Culprit worm in the black shad color.....the black side down and the light gray up to catch the available light from above and to the side, and sillouette better from underneath. |

I just riggem eyes up. Ya know the old saying match the hatch? Well, how many frogs have you seen swimming upside down??? But honestly, I think it's probably the action you create with the frog bait that is the most important issue with any frog bait. Proper season as well, which in my area, this is definately not, since frogs here have gone underground to hibernate by now. But down south I suppose it's still a viable bait.
