You know I almost agree with Tom on this one. I'll give ya two examples why.
1., I have a brother. He is a very smart guy, midway through med school, one day he will be raking in the big bucks. He is 100%, completly incapable of doing anything mechanical. He can't pop a hood. He can't drive a nail. He can't fix a toilet. He is going to be fleeced by the handyman...now why can't he do any of that? Because growing up I did it all for him. I could build a house with all the knowledge I learned from being my parents foreman. Sometimes I think it would have been better to have let my brother to his own devices to learn just a bit more. 2nd, and this pertains more to fishing...one of my favorite books of all time is called The Philosphical Fisherman by Howard Blaisdale. Its long out of print, written by an oldtimer way back in the 70s. In the 1st chapter he talks about how lucky he was to have had to learn fishing with no instruction whatsoever. He thinks that he became both more self sufficient that way, and he enjoyed the learning curve more. His first fish was caught on a sewing needle that was bent, not a store bought hook...man, what a thrill that must have been. Sorry for the digression, just something to think about. Having said all that, I will give you a bit of advice on the bike-rod dilema. Mount the rod so that the tip is pointing backwards behind the bike. It wont be as easy to break that way. I'll let you figure out how to attach the thing.

Hey wtl, when I was 3 or 4, I would steal some staples from my mom, get some kite string, and a stick. Sharpen the staples, and go down to the park, and put a cricket on, and catch little bnluegill.

With all that wilderness knowledge you can't carry a pole on a bike? Just out of curiosity, how does one go about sharpening a staple?

I wasn't the one that asked the question to begin with brother! And I do carry a pole on my bike, thank you very much! (figured it out myself) You sharpen a staple, with a rock, or if I sould get my hands on one, a file.

OK, I say "brother" to just about everyone. Next, I was not declaring that like I had figure out the human genome system, I am saying that I am surely smart enough to figure it out, and I did, I was stating this fact just because you accused me of not being able to figure it out on my own. Next, I was four, and didn't have fishing hooks, so I made my own, and they surely worked better than no hooks.
Sorry if I offended you, I think you might have been mixed up, and I was not trying to be rude |

Handle bars and back pack, are good but if your going by trees and under them or around objects you run the chance of breaking you pole. I think a collapsible is the key you can get them for 9 bucks and you throw you good real on and no worries.how much more simple do you want?
