Swimbait rods

What makes a swimbait rod good? (not who) I'm talking about small hollow body swimbaits.Do you need a med or med heavy, fast or moderate. Thanks Bcklash

Lash, the heavier you plan on going with baits, the higher the power I would go. And most of the SB specific blanks I have seen are fast to mod-fast action. The power generally runs 1/2-2 oz (Med), 2-6 oz (MH), 3-8 (H), & 4-10 (XH). I am going by a blank companies specs on this information. But I fish with a guy that throws 6-8 oz baits and they are broom stick rods. I think if you underrate the power, it is going to be like fishing a 20' crank on a Med rod and wearing you out.

For small hollow bellies like you mention, I use a MH/F 6'6" or 7' rod. Basically any rod you would use for spinnerbaits would work well.

I like the slower action of a blended rod for my swimbaits, because I have more luck when I fish swimbaits slowly. Other than that, I go by the weight of the baits.
IE...Throwing 3/8 to 3/4 ounce soft swimbaits on a MH crankbait rod rated for 1/4 to one ounce.

Most of the time I'm using my 5 inch soft swimbaits around fairly good cover like lilly pads, and heavy vegitation, so I've been using the same rod as my froggin rod.

Depends on the weight of the bait. For the small ones (bass trix to 6.5 in) I use a 7' med heavy bait caster. I use a med heavy 7' inshore rod for the bigger stuff. If your throwing a bait with treble hooks use mono, and go easy on hook sets or a med rod. Trebles tear out easy, the 5&6/0 weighted hooks in the soft plastics let you hammer em pretty good.
