What bait will win the Classic???
OK, answer two questions for me and be as specific as you can as to size, color, etc.
1.What will be the predominate bait used by all the competitors at the Classic? 2.What will be THE go-to bait used by the winner?? |

That is just wrong. Gonna strictly guess, so people, don't be bashin' on me.
1) Spinner/buzz bait - Chartruese or Chartruese/White 3/8-1/2 oz 2) Jig-N-Pig - Black/Blue or Pumpkinseed w/matching trailer

A 5/16 spinnerbait with one gold willow blade, and one silver colorado blade, 18 strands of pink in the skirt, 12.5 strands of blue in the skirt, and 17.85 strands of silver in the skirts, a 4/0 Mustad hook, an R-bend wire, half the paint missing from the head, on 12lb fluoro, tied with an improved clinch knot, on a 6'4" MH rod and a 6.3:1 gear ratio reel.
Or a crankbait. BB

I'm gonna say that some sort of plastic will be the dominant bait if they are sight fishing.
Who's pushing what bait right now? Strike King/KVD's got the Sexy Shad. Spro's got the Little John and the new Burpin' Frog (sorry, my name for it). Jymsu is the new hot brand of spinnerbait/jig to compete with Booyah. Sebile baits are popular right now. And other than swimbaits the Ozmo is the only new plastic that I think will be pushed. |

I know for a fact those baits are catching fish around Louisiana right now. I've tried probably 100 baits in the last 2 weeks and a white spinner and black and blue jig are the ones that are actually landing me the most fish by FAR.

my guesses would be that jigs and spinnerbaits could play a big role as could jerkbaits. but i am not claiming to have much knowledge on river systems. i also would bet that there would be a cranking pattern as well. so here is my predictions:
1. crankbaits will play a huge part 2. jigs will play big part as well, both casting and flipping 3. spinnerbaits could be a factor 4. like smitty i think there will be some guys catching fish by flipping softplastics.

The lures "released" for the classic, which the pros will do their best to promote by winning with them:
1. Berkley Crazy legs chigger craw...some berkley pro will be flipping stumps with this one 2. Laser Lure...it's not new but Ike and Boyd have new deals so if either of them do well you will hear a lot about this one 3. Skeet Reese's Redemption spinnerbaits...Pretty sweet if you've seen them 4. Alton has some new stuff out that is not even announced yet, as do other pros.. The idea is that they keep these baits a secret, or release them just before the classic, their pro ideally wins using their bait at least part of the time....then for the entire year the lure flies off the shelves Just like the sexy shad last year..even though KVD didnt win the classic. I believe the system is rigged a little bit more than most realize. |

The Red River backwaters are fairly stained and water temps are right about 50 degrees. The water is generally shallow with lots of bayous, creeks and ditches, stumps, trees and hydrilla are you main types of cover. Bass will be in a "pre-spawn" mode for the most part. Spinnerbaits and shallow cranks will get most of the action with jigs and T-rigged critter baits to used on the denser clusters of brush and wood piles. I would put my money on the spinner bait guys with KVD at the top of the heap. Whites White/Chartreuses, and even KVD's signature color Sexy Shad. Blade color will likely be a combination Gold (colorado on front) and Nickel (willow on back). I wish I was there, that kind of fishing is right up my alley! (if the week has some 65 and 70 degree days, then the buzzbaits will be coming out too!

IMO the winner will be a jig, the water, could be cold and muddy, two conditions that spell tough fishing! This will benefit the flippers and pitchers, that will find shallow clearer water, and throw jig in heavy cover. I think the jig could really stand out!
