A very fun weekend!
We went away this weekend for my buddy's bachelor party...I rented us a nice cabin out in Scroggins,TX at Deer lake...It a nice spring fed lake on a private ranch...Very pretty place,I wish I had more scenic pics.
Out of 13 guys that came out...Only one had service on his phone. So we had to take shifts calling wives all weekend, lol. The first night was catfishing from the piers...And Secret 7 dip bait proves to be a waste of money again...Ive yet to catch a single fish on it and Ive had it for over a year now. My buddy Nate brought his rigs and used shrimp that was succesful..Catching a few fat 1lb flatheads...All released. After a long night, and 4hrs of sleep..I arose at 8am to start cleaning up outside a little...I went to the dock to have a smoke and saw giant schools of bluegill all around the peir .This water was extremely clear and about 2.5-4ft deep....The only rod I left at home was my ultralite. So I tied on a brim hook with a single split shot to my spinning rod..Along with my trusty bait ''hot dog''. No reeling needed...Just a little underhand flick...I probably caught around 30+ bluegill that morning. Then handed it off to other guys to enjoy catching fish...We keep some of the bigger ones for a fry and some little ones for catfish bait. We rented a jon boat and trolling motor that a few guys took it out and came back 2hrs little with one tiny rock bass. Me and Jake (the one getting married) took out the boat for some bass fishing...The bottom of this lake was covered in thick vegatation throughout...We tossed T-rigs and fought through it...Jake had a nice hit and lost it at the boat on a culprit curly tail worm in shad color....I switched to a Bigbite trick stick in white/silver flake and caught the first bass at about 1lb at the end of a laydown We tried lipless cranks and spinnerbaits with no luck and went back to bottom fishing. We moved to deeper water..maybe 12ft...Jake threw a modified spoon and hooked up to a nice bass at about 1lb. So thinking white is the key..I switched back to my trick stick and caught a nice beauty within 4 cast on the micro spiral rod. We didnt have a phones on us (why carry them since we didnt get service)..So we threw her on a stringer and trolled back very slowly measure, photo and safe release. She weighed 4lbs even at 20''...I was in a hurry to release her so I didnt get girth. You can see behind me how clear the water was around the peir. We all had a great time this weekend..Good beers, good laughs and the fishing proved successful.Plus it was fun to watch the guys who rarely ,if ever, fish spend most the time on the peir with rods in their hands. Next time well have to go longer, cause two nights wasnt enough!
